The Prevalence Of Ptsd In Teens
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is not just for adults
. Studies show a prevalence of PTSD in teens between the ages of 12 and 17.
A study published by the American Psychological Association (APA)reported that four percent of male youths and six percent of female youths reported PTSD symptoms. In that same study, approximately 75 percent of the adolescents also met the criteria for depression and/or substance abuse.Thestudy provides prevalence, comorbidity, and risk-factor data for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive episode (MDE), and substance abuse/dependence (SA/D)...support[ing] the hypothesis that exposure to interpersonal violence (i.e., physical assault, sexual assault, or witnessed violence) increases the risk of these disorders and of diagnostic comorbidity.1
PTSD can have a major impact on a persons life especially in adolescents who may begin to form unhealthy coping habits. Many people who suffer with PTSD symptoms--re-experience symptoms, avoidancesymptoms, and hyperarousal symptoms--often turn to drugs and alcohol to ease their symptoms. However, drug and alcohol use only exacerbate the conditions and cause more harm. Individuals dealing with PTSD need healthy alternatives and outlets to help manage their symptoms.
Victims of post traumaticstress disorder typically experience feelings of isolation, uneasiness, and are sometimes aggressive toward themselves and others for no apparent reason. These symptoms can also be seen in teens with PTSD. Understanding PTSD and incorporating psychotherapeutic PTSD treatment is important in achieving a full recovery. PTSD treatments should be focused onmaking the individual feel whole again.Fortunately, in recent years medical science has brought about new information and technologies that can stabilize and reverse the negative aspects of PTSD. These state-of-the art treatments use ground breaking brain scan technology coupled with effective counseling to identify the root problems and stressors that can enslave individuals suffering from PTSD. These treatments can be very effective for teens who have not yet had time to develop unhealthy habits for a long period of time. Such advanced treatment centers can often be found by searching for advanced drug and alcohol rehab centers. Such centers can effectively treat the PTSD as well any PTSD related drug and alcohol addictions.
