Anesthesia Is First

Making the Incision

One or more incisions are made in the areas required. The goal here is to minimize scarring, which means using as few incisions as possible. However, in a traditional facelift, the incision begins at the hairline right at your temples and continues downwards to the ear and around it to the lower scalp. If you need any additional changes, such as to the neck area, additional incisions are necessary. The doctor will make the changes needed and then will use sutures and skin adhesives to close off these incisions.

Limited incision procedures have smaller incisions. The incisions occur at the temples and continue around the ear. Other incisions may be made at the lower eyelids or the upper lip as necessary. The necklift is often used to improve sagging jowls and fat accumulation under the chin. It can also help with improvement of loose skin at the neck. The incision here will begin in front of the ear lobe, wraps around to behind the ear, and ends in the lower scalp.

Recovery

You will then move into the recovery area to come out of the anesthesia and to begin the healing process. The length of time you spend in the medical facility depends on the type of procedure you had, as well as the overall condition you are in.

Once you go home from having a facelift, you will still need time to recover. Your doctor will provide you with very specific things to do to encourage healing, such as getting enough rest while you heal. You also will have pain medications to help you through it.
