People decide to elope for many reasons. Traditionally, people used to elope with a person other than the one they were supposed to marry, and consequently created a scandal to shake the whole family. These days, eloping is getting popular as a way to avoid the whole wedding circus and extreme expense of a traditional wedding, which few in fact can afford.

One of the biggest advantages of eloping is that you will potentially save a bundle. If you are paying for a wedding yourself, this can be a very smart move indeed. With average wedding costs running over $20,000, the idea of skipping the traditional wedding ceremony in favor of eloping doesn't seem like too crazy of an idea. This fact is especially true when economic conditions are less than optimal.

Weddings are extremely stressful. There are so many details to juggle when you are planning a wedding. Plus there are silly customs to follow, food choices to pick, wedding cakes and party favors to select, and not to mention bridesmaids' dresses to choose. Bridesmaids resent those dresses forever! Because you saved a fortune by eloping, instead of just going to Niagara Falls, you could potentially go somewhere more exotic like Fiji, or even Paris.

Whatever they decide, it has to be a joint decision. No marriage should start on a wrong note. If the bride wanted a white wedding and her fianc convinced her to elope to save money, she would resent it and secretly never forgive him for that. If the fianc is from the traditional family and he cares very much about what his mother says, he would have very hard time explaining to his mother why he deprived her of a big wedding. So, if he gives in to his darling's urging to elope, he will secretly not be happy about it.

Eloping can save some stress of a big wedding, but it does not relieve the young couple of the responsibility to share their happiness with those who love them. That means that some type of gathering should be organized to celebrate their new life. Usually, people organize a nice dinner and invite closest family and friends. Picnics are not a bad idea, or renting a cottage in the country and inviting family and friends for a barbecue.

Wedding announcement is also a must, but modern communication tools make it much easier. The couple can send a mass email, or create a blog and post photos of their honeymoon. It is important to explain their decision to avoid people feeling hurt from being excluded from such a big event as a marriage of their loved ones.

Informing people that you eloped will also let them impart their positive wishes. Additionally, wedding announcements will also let you catch up with old friends and relatives that you haven't spoken with in years.

Remember it is your wedding and you can handle it however you may choose. You want your wedding day to be a happy one, so choose whatever suits you the best.
