The Protoss void ray rush is an absolutely brilliant tactic that helps you move on from rush play.

As principally a Terran player, I've always absolutely hated those flying alien ships.

They appear out of nowhere, before I've had time to create anything like an air defence and waste all my SCV's. Sometimes I've got marines to counter them, sometimes I haven't and then I'm in bad mood.

That said, this can be a real game winner against Zerg and other Protoss.

Anyhoo. The point of this Advanced Starcraft 2 Tactic is to throw your opponent off-guard, ruin his economy and possibly even win outright.

A couple of things you must know whilst going into this...

* Scout, scout and scout. If he's planning to rush you, DON'T use the Void Ray rush.

* Don't let him scout your Stargate. Either hide it at the back of your base, or somewhere else other than your base, but your best idea is to block him access to your base.

At 8 Probes build a Pylon

At 11 Probes build a Gateway

And then immediately lay down an Assimilator.

At 13 another Assimilator. You need gas, and lots of it.

At 15 Probes lay down a Cybernetics Core, keeping that mining activity and gas production going.

Another Pylon now

at 19 Probes lay down a Stargate.

Now, start off Void Ray construction. Don't queue, just have 1 per Stargate building at a time. And keep the Probes coming.

At 21 a Pylon

At 24 Probes, build another Stargate.

And keep going until you have 6 VRs, which will take a surprising short amount of time.

If you're brave and have scouted well, please by all means, go and gank away once you've created a couple of Void Rays.

The Protoss Void Ray rush is an excellent example of building for a specific unit. Understanding how this works and when to build what unit will propel you rapidly towards the Diamond League and help you stay there!
