The Purpose Driven Website
Websites are now the norm in the business arena.
Part of the way your business presents itself is by it's website. But a website needs a reason to be visited. Think about it. The last website you visited had a purpose didn't it. It was being informative, giving you a product or service, or letting you take advantage of something that you thought would help you improve your life. Maybe it was offering you free email, putting you in touch with family and friends, or giving you something else that was convenient, modern or available for a nominal payment that got you to click on the link.
In other words the site had a purpose.
Purpose driven websites are sites that are savvy, easy to use and informative. They were designed for the people to be used by the people and give a face to the company that they represent. They are not pushy sales driven sites that immediately go for the customers pocket. They are sites that are there to be used and to help the customer make the choices that will help them to live better and act smarter. A purpose driven site will keep your customers satisfied, keep sales up and keep customers coming back for more.
So Why can't any website be purpose driven?
Because not all websites are designed equally. If a site isn't built with the customer in mind then poor design can take root . Depending on your company and what your competitors have on their websites, people come to expect certain services and information to be available on your website. Say for instance your site is for your new insurance company. Well, thanks to companies like progressive your customers may expect to see the rates of not only your company, but other companies as well, and not having this service can be detrimental to your companies image. You company come off as having something to hide and customers will act accordingly and leave your site in favor of your competitors.
Think of the two preferred search engines on the web today Google and Yahoo. If they didn't offer free email would you be tempted to use their other services or click on any ads that the site produced when you searched. Unlike their predecessors, Google and Yahoo took advantage of offering something for free and used the attention they got to set the standard for all search engines on the web.
Sitting on the fence
You may say that your website is fine, it brings in a modest amount of followers and your customers have few complaints . So why fix it. Well your website may be good but why not listen to those complaints that your customers have and make it great. You may even want to pay a professional to evaluate the user friendliness of your site and give you some ideas of where you need improvement . But the customers are key. Why? Because they are the ones who have to live with and use your site each and every day.
Maybe your site isn't cell phone friendly, maybe it crashes at a crucial point during use. There may even be missing pages that your company may not be aware of . The larger the site, the more problems that it can present.
Feedback
The number one way to monitor the effect your website has on it's customers is to let those customers know you want to hear from them. Use short surveys to see if the purpose of your website is being met and don't hesitate to change if it's not . Some of the worst websites have become the best websites through listening to their customers and enacting gradual changes to service and web performance.
The Purpose Driven Website
There are many different ways for a website to be Purpose driven. It all depends on your target audience, the talent of the developer, and just how far you are willing to go to meet the needs of your customers. The key is change where change is due and your determination to get it right. Again giving your competitors websites a look won't hurt either. Let yourself gain from not reinventing the wheel. Don't copy your competitors website, learn from it and apply a few touches that they missed . Before you know it your website will be purpose driven and right for the web.
