The Pygmalion Effect In Fitness

Have you ever heard of Pygmalion and the powerful Pygmalion effect

?

This is a fascinating little story with deep ramifications upon every facet of our lives-fitness included of course.

Pygmalion ,according to the greek mythology was a sculptor from Cyprus.Pygmalion created Galatea, a woman out of ivory-a statue that is-with which he gradually fell in love.

His love was so strong and pure and his expectations for Galatea so high and real that prompted Aphrodite-the greek goddess of love- to infuse life to the statue.

We call "Pygmalion effect" the phenomenon according which the higher the expectations we set for certain people-and for ourselves-the greater the performances we can elicit from them.

We could say that our behaviour is infuenced by our expectations.

In other words the Pygmalion effect is a kind of self -fulfilling prophecy:

you are waiting for success and success is what you find.

Conversely: feed poor expectations for yourself and you increase your odds for failure.

Some questions for the fitness enthusiasts:

-do you undermine your progress and results by setting limiting beliefs for yourself?

-do you expect success and great achievements on your part?

-have you found a fountain of self-motivation?

-are you surrounded by some sources of inspiration?

-how much a given fact is a given fact?

-do you believe in destiny?Or are you convinced that you can create your own future?

-what about your self-esteem and self-worth?

-do you accept that other people know what is best for you?

Look! The problem for most of us is not the lack of knowledge. We know perfectly well what to eat and how to exercise. The problem-among else-is one of setting the proper expectations.

Challenge your limiting beliefs! Make the first but most vital step: change your way of thinking and behaviour will follow.

Learn to feed high - realistic though- expectations for yourself,"obliging" thus him to undertake action and succeed.

At the very least do not doom yourself to failure!
