The Real Time Power Of Twitter
How could founders Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams
, and Biz Stone have ever known the incredible buzz they would produce when they created the networking juggernaut called Twitter?
Twitter's success really isn't surprising when you consider the fact that a time leveraged global culture was given the opportunity to communicate using 140 character free service to advertise, comment, or just think out loud.
Thus far, over 114 million users have signed up with over 40 percent of them being American. The part that's surprising is that Twitter has taken its seat at the table alongside heavy hitters like Facebook and Google at the top of the technical world.
Initially jeered as a cheap merchant of juvenile banter like, the service has unveiled itself to be a bonafide barometer for measuring the sentiment of an international civilization. In fact, if something isn't tweeted, did it actually happen?
Twitter has become the virtual water cooler of the world according to Adam Ostrow, editor of the media blog Mashable. It's a place where you can evaluate the thoughts of millions of people and hear what they're actually feeling and saying about everything.
Among the first to realize the networking power of Twitter were celebrities like Paula Abdul, who tweeted to her fans that she was throwing in the towel as an Idol judge. While giving birth to her daughter, Erykah Badu kept her fans abreast of every step of her delivery using tweets.
Twitter users range from blue collar Joe's to CEO's, all communicating in a sort of computerized town square, with the incredible force and potential to raise millions of dollars in pledge donations for Haiti relief, to making 16 year old Justin Beiber an international pop star.
The Library of Congress is actually planning to archive all of the world's tweets. It will probably be about six months before they can marshal the staff to distribute the information which will mainly be furnished to scholars. According to Matt Raymond, it's about having a first person accounting of what the world's spectators were saying. Wouldn't it be awesome to have been able to collect instant real time world opinions and reactions from people just after Pearl Harbor?
I think for most people, the allure is generated by Twitter's ability to get right to the point of any given matter. With a maximum potential of only 140 characters, people are forced to cut to the chase and to the heart of the issue.
Twitter's real potential is the ability to take the pulse of the world regarding issues. People can express their individuality in a world forum like never before. It's like having an open hailing frequency to the world.
Everyone seems to be tuned to the same channel so to speak. After the terror attacks on the World Trade Center in New York, we spent millions in an attempt to synchronize communication and communication systems.
Twitter has really been able to make a difference when time mattered most. During the Haiti disaster, everyone seemed to be monitoring Twitter. As relief efforts were underway, Doctors Without Borders flights were unable to get clearance to land in Port au Prince. United Sates Air Force personnel were able to get runways cleared after reading about the problem on Twitter. According to Biz Stone, this is how Twitter has become a rallying point for social good. Stone says he would love to extend the fact that people are emoting, into empathy.
Twitter announced last Monday, their intentions to increase their staff size to accommodate income producing ventures to include Promoted Tweets. Their staff has grown 5 times its original size with the past twelve months. This is just another way Twitter will be able to better help businesses in the future.
Biz Stone me Evan Williams while they were both employed by Google. Together they created an initial venture called Odeo, a company that specialized in podcasting, which eventually morphed into Twitter. Stone says they just want to be part of the dialogue that helps businesses become better businesses. He declares that Twitter can be a useful tool even for people who don't feel they have anything viable to say. He believes Twitter has the power to provide instant insight into the national psyche. This is unprecedented.
In decades past, focus groups were claimed to be the cutting edge method of determining public sentiment and for gathering data, whereas Twitter provides a way to monitor naturally occurring conversations. Government agencies, consumer products companies, and the entire healthcare market are paying careful attention to Twitter. Companies who produce pharmaceuticals can listen to Twitter conversations that relate to their products. This is important because it is better for them to know than not to know as relating to adverse effects, legal implications, etc.
Algorithms used by CNN, carefully sort through millions of tweets in an attempt to measure public opinion on everything imaginable including movies, politics, current events, and anything they feel could be newsworthy.
Twitter is a great way to channel information to your self for evaluation. It's easy, real time, and larger than life.
