Bacon's Rebellion In 1676, a hundred years before the American colonies rebelled against England

, a man named Nathaniel Bacon led a rebellion of settlers against William Berkeley, the governor of Virginia, which was then a colony of England. The government of the colony had fallen into the hands of Berkeley and a few rich planters who owned huge plantations or farms on the broad plains near the seacoast of Virginia. The farmers who lived along the western border of the colony were not allowed to have any say in the government. When Indians began attacking the farmers in the west, Berkeley would not send any troops to protect the colonists. The people of the colony then asked Bacon to help them. Bacon gathered an army of volunteers and drove out the Indians. Because Bacon had raised an army without orders from the government of the colony, Berkeley declared him a rebel and a traitor. Bacon came to Jamestown, the main city of the colony, and forced Berkeley to make him an officer of the colony's volunteer army. As soon as Bacon left to fight the Indians, Berkeley again declared him a traitor and began gathering an army to attack him. Bacon returned once more to Jamestown, captured the city, and drove Berkeley out. Soon after that, Bacon became sick and died; but Berkeley lost his position as governor when the king found out about his bad behavior. Nathaniel Bacon was born in 1647 and died in 1676.It was the first rebellion in the American colonies in which discontented frontiersmen took part; a similar uprising in Maryland occurred later that year.
