The Red Rose, The Gift Of Love

Ask people what is the traditional flower for Valentines day and the vast majority will answer 'A Red Rose', the gift of love

. This is because the rose has long been valued for its beauty and has an extensive symbolic history. The ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans associated it with Isis, Aphrodite and Venus, their goddesses of love. The rose is also often used a symbol of the Virgin Mary.

The red rose is meant to signify both love and passion and has been used as such in romantic prose and poetry. 'What's in a name? That which we call a rose, By any other name would smell as sweet' and 'O, my love's like a red, red rose' are two examples which will spring readily to mind. Why red though, well some studies have indicated that red may impart a physical effect upon the viewer such as raising respiration rates and increasing blood pressure, which in turn make the heart beat faster.

However, the rose comes in a variety of colours, many of which are associated with symbolic meanings

An orange rose is meant to show desire and fascination, blue indicates uniqueness whilst a white rose symbolizes purity and innocence. The yellow rose may be given for friendship or platonic love but can also convey jealousy.

The rose, though, is not the only flower that can be used to convey a sentiment. Many other flowers may be presented on Valentine's Day.

However, it may be wise to be careful with your choice so as not to impart the wrong message. For instance a red tulip is supposed to be declaration of love whilst a yellow one is said to indicate 'hopeless love'. A black rose is best avoided altogether, that is unless you wish to convey hatred or are saying farewell!

Hyacinths or crocuses may also be presented as Valentines Day gifts, each having a different meaning depending on the message you wish to convey to the recipient.

Despite the wealth of flowers now commonly available , the red rose, is by far and away the most popular choice of flower for senders and recipients on Valentines Day. This is mainly because of tradition and perception and although, in reality, the type and colour of flower presented is a personal choice determined upon by the likes and dislikes of both the sender and the intended recipient, it seems likely that the red rose will continue to dominate the market for this special day.
