The Religious Experience In Antarctica

This gentleman cannot forget the sight he had seen when he went to Antarctica and saw the sunrise over the continent's plains

. It was a religious moment for him. A satellite technician from Texas, this man described the place as having God's presence. Only a few people like him had the privilege of seeing this great big slab of ice and volcanic ash.

It is pretty normal for people to come here to first pass by McMurdo station, which is at the edge of the Ross Ice Shelf. A former US military outpost, McMurdo is now being managed and funded by the National Science Foundation.

Activities in this place are limited to card playing, working, and drinking. Getting outside requires several layers of high tech polar clothing and a hardy constitution, as temperatures are routinely 30 degrees below zero. His work in tracking satellites did not deter him from appreciating nature's beauty. The sunsets at the month of May over at the Royal Society Mountains are what he relishes a lot.

It was an awesome thing for him to see the names of the members of the 1908 Shackleton expedition. According to him, the people at McMurdo were also unforgettable. The biographies there are incredible, he said, and everybody's on a first name basis, from the PhDs to the janitors.

The perils of the landscape do not frighten him at all. Antarctica has not intimidated this woman of 47 years who had ventured to see a breeding ground of penguins. According to her, penguins have always charmed her. They were my favorites when I was still young. They are like small people. I'd prefer to call them good looking rather than cute.

She recalls an image she had seen when she visited Antarctica. This was the sight of King Penguins by the thousands gathering on the shores of a bay. She described it as something truly eye catching. An academic grant or a pilot's license is not necessary to be there in The Ice.
