The Remarkable Transformation Of Laptops

Advancements in computers and computer technology are never ending

. There was once a time when computers were considered as complex and expensive devices. But today, thanks to technological revolutions, computers have become more affordable and accessible. Most people have a computer at home, particularly portable and lightweight laptops. Laptops of today use mobile broadband to access the World Wide Web. In this article, we shall uncover the interesting story behind the technology of laptops.

Where did it all begin

During the late 60s and 70s, researchers at Xerox conceived the idea of a portable computer system. They wanted to make a portable computer system which can run on battery power. They called it Dynabook. However, the idea never materialized due to the backwardness of technology at the time.

In 1981, the Osborne1 was introduced in the market. It featured a small monitor but did not run on battery power. The Osborne1 allowed businesses to take their work in any location. However, the dependence of this technology to electricity has hindered it from becoming a success.

The first real laptop

The first real laptop was born in 1982. It ran on battery power and featured a

flat monitor that can fold down to the keyboard. It resembled a clam shell and was later known as the "Grid Compass." Many laptops today still bear this design. Due to its expensive cost and IBM incompatibility, many did not find the first laptop to be a practical choice. It was mainly used by the NASA and United States armed forces.

Just a year after the first real laptop was introduced, two new versions of portable laptops emerged: the Compaq portable and Epson HX20. These laptops used sophisticated technology to cater to businesses. The portable laptop made by Compaq were compatible with MS-DOS and IBM Software. Epson boasted affordable laptops with rechargeable batteries.

Before the end of 1983, Japan released Kyocera Kyotronic 85. It became a huge success in the United States though it flopped in Japan. This laptop featured an internal modem developed by Microsoft and could run on ordinary AA batteries.

More laptop versions come to light

In mid "80s, two IBM compatible laptops made huge mark ups in the computer market. These laptops were developed and manufactured by Toshiba and IBM. Though they had few features, many people liked these laptops because of their weight, power and ability to pause""allowing laptop users to stop work and continue without restarting.

The competition between laptop manufacturers became stiff in 1987. Several laptop manufacturers released many different versions of laptops. But one company dominated the laptop market and that"s the Zenith Data systems, also known as ZDS. The famous company, Apple, released its first portable computer in 1989, naming it the Macintosh Portable. But because of its bulky and heavy profile, many people found it an inconvenient device. In 1991, Apple introduced the PowerBook. This portable computer boasts several features that are still present in modern laptops. These include keyboard placement and touchpad mouse.

A new phase for laptops

When the Windows 95 operating system was introduced in the market, laptop"s design transformed. This is when laptop manufacturers started equipping their gadgets with Intel Pentium Processors, floppy disk drives and CD-ROM drives. Since 1995, the technological developments on laptops never seized.

Laptops and Mobile Broadband

Gone are the days when laptops were dependent on phones and cables when accessing the internet. Today, laptop users are rarely seen using a dial up connection. Mobile broadband is now available for laptop users who wish to access the internet even when traveling. There are several mobile broadband providers out there. Be discerning when signing up with any internet provider to ensure fast and reliable connection when using your laptop.
