The Resurrection Of The 3D Film Agenda In The Twenty-First Century

When 3D film originally debuted nearly 60 years ago it was an instant pop culture hit. In fact, in the 1950's it was an extremely popular form of film presentation, though it was very expensive to produce at the time. At the time this type of filming was mostly relegated to cheap niche films that required expensive special effects to keep fans entertained, few of the 3D films of the 1950's went down in cinematic history. The cost of producing high quality films in 3D was more than most studios could afford. Film producers weren't getting what they wanted out of the expensive to budget films and eventually they faded into oblivion.

Suddenly, around 1980 the 3D film started to show up again. The eighties were a big decade for these types of films, followed by an additional sprinkling here and there in the nineties. At the turn of the twenty-first century rapidly improving technology made it cheaper and easier than ever to create this film genre. Yet again, trendiness resurrected the 3D film, but this time with more success than Hollywood could have imagined.

Starting shortly after the beginning of the 21st century most children's films were at least available in limited 3D release. Additionally scary movies, science fiction films, action films, even music video collections began cropping up every week in 3D format. The proudest success story of the twenty-first century came with 2009's runaway success, Avatar. The astronomical success of Avatar left filmmakers in every genre looking for ways to bring 3D into their own work. Companies instantly began to work overtime to bring out new 3D capable televisions.

Now that 3D film has caught the attention of the casual market almost every movie to come out is shown in 3D for just a few bucks more. A savvy film producer of the 1890's named William Friese-Greene first came up with a way to create this type of film experience. 3D film today is nothing like the productions of the early twentieth century. 3D televisions and ever developing technology promise to bring even more fantastic illusions into the limelight soon.

The 3D trend seems to be here to stay this time around with many major movies such as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows movie, Scott Pilgrim vs The World, and Tron Legacy being shown in 3D. As the trend carries on, development of more and more advanced ways of viewing and experiencing films will present themselves to the public eye.
