Retro technology has quite a following. USENET is actually one of the oldest systems for networking with other individuals, and it's still going strong. If you like the appeal of older technology-but want something that's useful and modern at the same time-you might enjoy the USENET system. Some of the basics of it are very retro, but it's got all the modern features that any Internet user would expect.

One of the recurrent complaints about modern social media sites is that people post information that is completely useless and, in some cases, downright annoying. In addition to posting this information, social media sites are full of links to music you already know exists, news stories that you've probably already read and a lot of other information that doesn't do you any good. The text-based side of the Internet makes it a great choice for those who want something that offers more substance than regular Internet forums and certainly more substance than what you'll find in any of the popular social networking sites.

Another common complaint with social media sites is the fact that they are used heavily for advertising. In fact, many of the pages that people "follow" are just advertisements. If you want to get back to a point when the Internet was more about sharing information and meeting human beings than it is today, USENET will have a substantial amount of appeal to you.

USENET is all about conversation. It's about talking about topics, not talking about yourself. USENET newsgroups - at least the moderated ones - tend to be very quick to eliminate advertisements from the articles that are posted. This means that you don't have to read a bunch of advertisements about events you don't care about and that you don't have to sort through all of that material to get to the material you actually do care about.

Despite all of this, USENET has some of the most impressive multimedia capabilities around. For uploading and downloading files between you and friends, you have a hard time finding something faster. Even though the USENET system has a lot of retro appeal to it, it still has a lot of very modern features that make it eminently useful and that make it well worth the subscription price that most USENET service providers charge. This system has remained popular quite simply because it still offers something substantive and worthwhile.
