The Revamped Tropical Medicine Course

The continent of Africa is prone to tropical diseases that have resulted in sickness and death not only of the soldiers deployed there, but also of the general public. People providing emergency medical services should therefore have the knowledge of the latest emergency medical supplies used to combat such conditions.

First started in 1941, the Tropical Medical Course (TMC) was discontinued in 1991 after 50 years. In response to the growing needs of the Special Operations Command and the AFRICOM, this TMC course has been restarted. The TMC has been revamped with the inclusion of the latest developments in medical science. This revamped TMC was prepared in order to ensure the health and safety of all the soldiers who are deployed in the US Africa Command Operational Area. With the coordination of the Walter Reed Army Institute, the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences came up with this revamped Tropical Medical Course.

This week-long course is designed for both professional and non-professional caregivers providing emergency medical services. The course consists of seminars, lectures, and practical lab work. Attending this course is now an essential requirement for all medical professionals who are deployed to Africa. The course deals with the fundamentals of tropical diseases, preventive measures, and treatment. It focuses on helping personnel recognize, diagnose, and treat tropical diseases. One of the most basic precautions to be followed is use of Deet Insect Repellent to prevent insect borne diseases.

People involved in providing emergency medical services can carry backcountry medical kits that have essential medical supplies. Chinook Medical Gear is an awesome online store that stocks a wide range of emergency medical kits and emergency medical supplies such as Deet Insect Repellent.
