The Revolution Of Carriage Bolts

Carriage bolts are the round or circular headed bolts for timber

. They are threaded down the part of the shank. They are commonly inserted into pre drilled holes and are screwed to a nut for fastening. These bolts are normally used in making furniture because of their round head. They also have a square collar and are tightened to place via a wrench. The collar perfectly fits into pre drilled holes and twists towards the wood. This prevents the bolt from turning when you will tighten the nut into to place. Carriage bolts are coarse threaded and are available in a variety of diameters and lengths.

Carriage bolts are most often used in wood crafts. This is so because as the bolt is tightened, it is pulled further into the wood which causes it to lie more stably than traditional bolts. Carriage bolts are specifically designed to allow for a very secure fit thus are very reliable and safe. These bolts are sometimes known as plow bolts because of their function and usage. Plow bolts were developed in 1818 for use in common carriages which are the primary means of transportation at the time, hence the name. These bolts are normally made from steel, depending on their purpose.

Carriage bolts were revolutionized in 1860 and had started to be used for other applications. Unlike other bolts, these bolts are designed to be tightened using only one tool. These bolts are ideal for wrenches because of their assembly clearance. They are also most commonly used in snow plows attaching the cutting edge to the blade. Plow bolts do not have a hex unlike hex cap screws. Plow bolts cannot function by themselves, they need to be inserted to a square hole and tightened to a nut to effectively act as a fastener.

As mentioned earlier, these special bolts need pre drilled square holes where they can be inserted to. These carriage bolts also have domed heads which eliminates snag points on the fastener, and the square shoulder therefore holds the bolt in place while tightening the connection. So how do you create this pre drilled square holes then? Well first you'll need a few materials like a tape measure, drill bit set, drill motor, flapper wheel, combination square, an awl and a square file. Measure the width of your carriage bolt then drill your surface with a drill bit with the exact measurements.

Once you're done with the drill motor, run the flapper wheel along the exit of the hole. Now set the base of the combination square on the material. Extend this blade until it meets the drilled hole. Drag the awl to the end of the combination blade. Repeat the process to make a straight line forming a square. Slid your square file into the hole and align one corner of file to the corner of the square to move it up. You can then place your bolt in after.
