The Right Diamond Cut

When you're choosing an engagement ring setting for your custom engagement ring

, there are several things to consider. Choosing the band, the style, and the side stones (if you want any) can be very stressful difficult decisions. When those are finished, however, you're not quite finished. You still need to decide what diamond shape you would like for your handmade engagement ring. There are several to choose from.

First, one of the most popular type of shape is the cushion cut. Cushion diamonds are also known as pillow cut. The beauty of these stones is in how deep they are. This has been a popular stone in recent years and is what many fine jewelry makers are using as center stones these days.

Secondly, there is the round diamond. This is probably one of the most popular and most used shapes in rings these days. These look great in solitaire rings where they can really shine. Since this is the most used type of diamond shape, all other shapes are referred to as "fancy" shapes.

A radiant cut diamond is a square or rectangular cut with seventy facets. This is for maximum shine and light refraction. It's not quite an emerald cut which is rectangular as well. This is because emerald cut diamonds are also known as step cuts. This is because of the long, broad cuts across the top of the diamond. This style also has cut corners so it's not exactly rectangular. Another style that is similar is the asscher cut. The asscher is a square emerald cut diamond. These types of cuts have been gaining in popularity in the recent years and are gaining on the round and princess stones.

Princess diamonds are the most popular of the fancy shapes. They're usually square or almost square and instead of the step cut that is so prominent in the emerald, radiant, and asscher cuts, this stone is cut for maximum brilliance with many facets which changes depending on the size and shape of the actual stone.

Marquise, oval, and pear shaped cut diamonds are all oblong and fairly self explanatory in nature.

When it comes to choosing it is obviously a personal preference and aesthetic. Small hands look best with round or princess cut diamonds but long fingers can handle the elongated shapes of emerald cuts and marquise diamonds. A one carat diamond will be deeper than it is across. A larger carat will most likely be broader than it is deep. Again, it's personal preference. Diamonds, like women, come in all kinds of beautiful shapes and sizes.
