The Right Lipstick Color For You

Just about every woman has bought a lusciously colored lipstick only to get home

, try it on, and hate it. If you don't know what to look for, finding the perfect lipstick might seem like a hit-and-miss affair.

Lipsticks are made for two types of skin tones: warm and cool. If you have warm skin tones, you look good in colors that have a red base. Cool skin tones are best supported by colors with a blue base. That seems pretty straightforward until you find out that red hues can have a blue base, and blue-type colors - like violet - can have a red base. You can have cool warm colors and warm cool colors. How do you tell which is which?

While you can train your eye to see the base tones of any hue, until you're trained and proficient, take a friend and go shopping for clothes, particularly shirts or blouses in many different colors. Try on the shirt and have your friend look closely at your face. Although it can be hard to tell under harsh store fluorescents, a color that makes you seem sallow and yellow will be a clue as to whether your have warm or cool skin tones. Your skin will turn sallow if you are wearing cool colors and have a warm skin tone, and vice versa. Remember, you need to be brutally honest with each other. If a color doesn't look good on you, you will look sick and yellow no matter how pretty a blouse it is.

You might also try on gold and silver necklaces. Gold jewelry, with its warm base, will make warm skin glow and cool skin look jaundiced. Silver jewelry, a cool base, makes cool skin tones brighten.

Now you can take your new-found expertise to the cosmetics department. Many companies label their lipsticks as warm, cool, and neutral (meaning that anyone can wear it). If you're still not sure if you are a warm or a cool, get a free makeover from a cosmetic saleswoman whose makeup you find attractive and tasteful. She will be able to help you see the difference and guide you toward the lipstick color family best suited to you.

Age is also a factor in choosing a great shade of lipstick. What looks good on the young may not flatter a more mature face. Bold colors like reds, burgundies, and corals can make young faces glamorous and sophisticated, but those same colors used later in life emphasize wrinkles, age spots, and gray hair. As a general rule, the older you are, the more you should gravitate toward shades that are closer to your natural lip color.

As a final piece of advice in your perfect lipstick shade hunt, choose a store that allows you to return lipsticks that look great in the tube but not on your face. If you can't find one, shop dollar stores to get a better idea of what looks good on you. You'll gain some education without a large cost.
