The Right Place For Your Elderly Parent, Is It Nursing Home Or Elderly Home Care?

As mother or father approaches senior age, you recognize signs that the time has come for them to have a caregiver

. There are two options for you, the nursing home or the elderly home care. Where do you intend to have your aging loved one spend his or her days as senior citizens? Let us check each of the two places.

Nursing home

The nursing home used to be the common option. Here you aging loved one will have company round the clock. You can rest assured that they are in a place where someone will always look after them. However, a nursing home is not the home your parents had been used to. Thus, they can develop feeling of depression that can eventually lead to health deterioration. It is in this context that you also consider the home care solution.

The nursing home is recommended for aged parents who may be suffering from dementia or other illnesses. But then, majority of the seniors do not need this kind of caring. Perhaps what is needed by these elderly people is some assistance in the performance of chores. Sometimes, they only need help when they are in the recuperating stage and once up and good again, there is no need for a caregiver.

Elderly home care

To some, the elderly home care is a better option. The senior loved one can also be given a round-the-clock caring and monitoring. The difference is in the place surrounding your mother or father. With home care services, your loved one stays in your home, in a place where he or she is comfortable and used to.

Your aged parent is still senile and mobile. He or she can still move around and your only concern is for him or her to have a look-out when you are at work. You can then hire a caretaker who will stay with the senior loved one while you are still out. Sometimes, a home caregiver is hired because the senior parent is under illness recovery period. Then after sometime, when they are back to their usual selves, you can stop the coming of the caregiver.

Suffice that the main difference between these two is the place where the aged parent will stay. In both cases, they will be afforded the needed health care. What you have to consider though is the over-all impact of their being stationed in unfamiliar place when you opt for the nursing home.

In putting the aged loved one in a home care, you have to deal with the home care agency. The big advantage of this type of service for the elderly is that the agency handles all the screening of prospective caregiver. The agency takes charge of the hiring and paying the caregiver. You just have to contact the home care agency and your needs for the care of your elderly will be addressed.

You may also do the hiring of a caregiver directly. You have to search for the carer of your parent. This becomes a more difficult and taxing task because you have to do the screening, hiring and paying the caregiver. One disadvantage here is what happens when the hired caregiver is not available or is indisposed. With direct hiring, you cannot easily find a substitute. In a home care, the agency can dispatch an alternate for the absent personnel or caregiver. There will always be a ready caregiver to look after your aged loved one. In addition, the agency will be able to select the caregiver who is most trained for the needs of dear elderly.

There are many advantages in placing the beloved parent under the care of home care service providers. But then, it is never free from drawbacks. For instance, with a home care, the aged parent may become confused when different persons are dispatched by the agency. Another disadvantage is your inability to choose the caregiver. The agency will assign the caregiver and you may not have a choice. Lastly, a home care service provided by an agency is costlier.

Aging of parents cannot be stopped. They grow old with you and when this is the occurrence, you have to be able to decide whether the poor senior should be placed in a nursing home or just under the care of a regular home care provider.
