The overall popularity of tattoos has exploded since the 1970's and has found its way into the mainstream. Today it seems that everyone has a tattoo. For a long time there was a stigma associated with having a tattoo. You were labeled a rebel, troublemaker, or one of many other labels that reflected on the tattooed person negatively. Many speculate that the reason for this was that traditionally it was the people on the fringes of society who were tattooed. Over time many people from many groups have adopted tattoos to display who they are and who they associate themselves with.

The turning point for tattoos came during the 1960's and 1970's with women exercising their civil liberties and the black civil rights movements. There was much turmoil during this time and the result was that the status quo had shifted and tattoos were becoming acceptable. From there we have seen the acceptance of tattoos dramatically increase.

Today you can find people from all walks of life having tattoos. You can find more actors, actresses, athletes, and musicians with tattoos that without. When you watch a tattoo themed show on TV it seems that everyone and their dog are getting a tattoo. It's important to note that though everyone is getting a tattoo, you should do your homework for tattoo artists and designs.

When researching the right tattoo for yourself, make sure to shop around for an artist whose style matches your desired tattoo. Another thing to check is the way the ink will look on your skin tone. With different skin tones, the color of ink may not appear as vibrant as on other skin tones. Though it's common for ink to fade over time, if the artist uses an inferior ink to begin with your tattoo will prematurely degrade. Be sure to discuss these issues with your selected tattoo artist before finalizing your tattoo.
