The Rising
As signs go, the Acronychal Rising was one of many
. By New Testament times, these celestial events were considered signs of wonderment by those who could interpret the stars.
Matthew 2:7:
Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.
In the above verse, the word appeared was taken from the Greek phainesthai (FAHee-nehz-TAH-ee) [], which means: Heliacal Rising. In modern astrology signs, the Heliacal Rsing represents the earliest visible rising of a star at day break. The star is just seen to rise above the eastern horizon at dawn and is then quickly blotted out as its light is swamped by the even brighter day light in the east. However, this phenomenon occurs only once a year for any star within the Ecliptic. Contrary to modern astrology, during the days of Herod, the Heliacal Rsing was thought to coincide with the birth date of a person. In this case (the earliest sighting of the Acronychal Rising), Herods question to the wise men was equivalent to having asked, When was the messiah-child born?
Matthew 2:8:
And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child
The wise men apparently answered king Herods question because he referred to the messiah-child as the young child from the Greek, paidion (pah-ee-DEE-ohn)[], more accurately meaning: toddler. Hence, we now have the reason king Herod targeted all the children in Bethlehem and the surrounding territories who was 2-years old and under. This venture was based on intel provided by the wise men.
Matthew 2:9:
When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.
The Acronychal Rising vanished shortly after the wise men reached Jerusalem. Thereby, encouraging them to pay king Herod a visit to request further guidance. As they departed, the celestial phenomenon reappeared. As the star continued its arc across the sky, the wise men followed until it reached its zenith (the highest point in the arc). Directly below this point was the house where the messiah-child (and family) resided.
BABYLON
Regardless of the apparent biblical significance of Astrology, tradition would have us condemn this science because of an often misinterpreted Old Testament passage:
Isaiah 47:13-14:
Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from [these things] that shall come upon thee. Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: [there shall] not [be] a coal to warm at, [nor] fire to sit before it.
Many religious advocates assume the text applies to just about anyone involved in the astrological sciences. But it should be noted, the above passages were specifically directed at ancient Babylon during a specific period, not just anyone throughout the ages.
At the time, Babylon was considered a very wicked city in the eyes of the LORD. A large portion of the Babylonian population consisted of Chaldeans; many of whom were masters of astrology. However, Babylon was not considered wicked solely because of its astrologers as much as it was the worship of the deity, Bel.Hence, the those astrologers, etc. who worshiped Bel and practiced idolatry were condemned. Incidentally, the wise men of our story were not of this bunch.
