The Risks Of Improper Tattoo Removal

. Unfortunately, many of these tattoos were done as a spur of the moment idea which is later regretted. This regret can then turn into a need to have the ink removed.

Despite the large group of people who have body art, society in general looks unfavorably on the person who is wearing it. This has caused people to lose possible positions in work, advancements, and become ostracised from some social settings. These reasons make it obvious why individuals then want to make the art disappear.

It is not uncommon to hear stories of people bleaching the skin, or using a caustic solution to cause a chemical burn to remove the top layer of skin and the tattoo. There are also several people who used some form of sandpaper, wire brush, or even a knife, to literally remove the tissue from the area. These have left very large and unwelcome scars in place of the artwork.

Modern medical forms of tattoo removal include dermabrasion, laser therapy, and surgical removal with skin grafting. Despite these being modern methods, the treatments have risks.

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy, is the most popular method. This process uses different colored lasers and intensities to break down the molecules of the ink that has been used. The wrong laser can cause deep scarring, skin discoloration, and chronic pain. There is also the possibility of an allergic reaction to the ink once it has been affected by the laser therapy.

Surgical Excision

Surgical removal of the artwork is typically recommended only for small sites. Larger areas will require more involved procedures including skin grafting. These leave the individual open to the possibility of secondary infection and rejection of the graft. This also has risks of infection, pain, scarring, bleeding, and in some cases loss of sensation at or around the site.

Dermabrasion, Salabrasion, Scarification

Dermabrasion is another option available to people who are trying to get rid of the ink. This is a procedure that requires many sessions. The health professional slowly removes the layers of skin to allow the body to flush the ink form the body. This is similar in practice to using sandpaper or wire brush, however, the instrument used is much finer. The risk is the same as the previous therapies, deep unsightly scarring, pain, and infection.

To prevent the need of having to remove body art, the individual who desires ink, should wait at least 6 months before having it done. The tattoo should also be in a place that can be covered with clothing in the event it is later regretted.
