The Role A Nurse Plays As A Caregiver

A nurse is a general term for a caregiver in a hospital environment

. Depending on their qualifications nurses may be entrusted with different tasks. As compared to a registered nurse a person with a BSN degree could have higher responsibilities and plays a more specialized role. A doctor may prescribe medications or carry out an operation but it is nurses who are in closer touch with patients and, in a way, contribute better to their recovery. In the operation theatre a nurse acts as an assistant to the doctor performing surgery. For the bedridden, nurses are a lifeline. What are the different roles a nurse plays?

A martinet yet a mother

Like a mother is concerned about her child, a nurse cares for each patient to ensure they are taking medicines and that they are recovering. If the patients feel pain, the nurse rushes to their side even in the middle of the night and treats them the way a mother would. At the same time she is a strict disciplinarian. She knows too well that patients shirk and have to be forced to take medicines or follow routines such as therapy while in recovery. If patients are forbidden to smoke or drink yet try to be sneaky, like a mother she watches over them and admonishes them.

An angel yet a confidante

Like an angel a nurse watches over her patients, concerned about their state of well-being and improvement. In a way she is disassociated and watches over them like an angel yet at the same time she also acts as a confidante, gives a helping hand and listens to them patiently while they describe their woes. Her patience is to be marveled at if you consider the countless number of patients who pour out more or less similar tales of woe into her ears. Like an angel she swoops down to help when she notices any patient in pain or in need of immediate assistance. Despite her busy schedule and the large number of patients she has to tend to, it is amazing how she can spare time to ask each about his health and listen to them with patience.

Sister and Counselor

A doctor may not have the time to explain everything to the patients. It falls to the nurse to explain the reasons underlying treatments, the reasons why patients should take medicines, exercise or follow instructions. Like a sister, she is always at the patients' side when needed and their guide. A patient is more likely to seek clarifications from the friendly, sister-like nurse than from a doctor who may seem a bit remote and brusque.

Researcher, Manager, Advocate, Agent of Change

As a nurse knowing the case history of the patient, she can be an agent of change, advising patients to adopt different and healthier lifestyles. She can be his advocate and explain what is best for him. She is also a manager, knowing the ins and outs and in place to make decisions and evaluate the care a patient needs, a vital link between administration and patients. Since she has firsthand experience of patients and the way they respond to treatment, she also contributes significantly as a researcher.
