The Role Of A Network Switch
One may wonder how businesses are able to run so effectively
. There are many answers to this question, but this article will be reviewing one particular revolutionary tool. It is called a network switch.
For those who aren't familiar with a computer network switch here's a brief description. A network switch is a device that is used to create a computer network. A computer network is what links computers together so that they are able to share files, link to the same printer, copier, etc.
While there are other ways to create computer networks, a network switch really is the most reliable of them all. Being 30 years old, the network switch has been polished so that product flaws are not an issue. It also works much differently from a hub which automatically increases its popularity. A hub also creates a network, but doesn't have the advancements of a network switch.
The speed of a network managed by a switch is usually much quicker than other networks. Those run by hubs experience collisions because the information is not filtered. A switch filters the information and allows it to be shared between just two computers making things run much faster.
A switch can be bought as a managed switch or an unmanaged switch. Unmanaged switches are convenient for home networks because they require no extra configuration. Everything is ready to go when you buy it. Unfortunately, this also means there is less network capacity.
A managed switch does come with greater network capacity, but needs to be configured before it can be used. Configuring may take a while but is actually a really nice feature. It allows you to set it up to your preference instead of abiding by a default setup.
The invention of wireless networking has had some impact on switch run networks or wired networks. Wireless provides a desirable alternative as the installation and setup is much quicker and easier. It is growing in popularity among many businesses, but still has many flaws and bugs to work out.
A network run through a switch is still found to be more reliable and functions quicker which helps to add value to wired networks. Many companies are using them and will be for a long time. Since switches aren't going anywhere soon, it's important to know all you can about them.
