The Role Of A Production Packer

Production packing workers are employed to pack goods and get them ready for storage or dispatch.

Food, clothing, toys, electronic goods, furnishings, chemicals, cleaning products, etc, all pass through their hands on the way from the production line to cardboard boxes and packing crates.

Some work directly on packing machines, requiring them to load materials and goods prior to operation, while others stand on the lines packing items as they come from the machines.

Usual tasks and activities for all packing workers include:

inspecting goods before packing them.

weighing or counting products.

handle perishable goods with appropriate care.

Pack goods by hand if and when needed.

putting labels on packed items.

pack heavy goods with appropriate equipment.

seal containers and boxes.

choosing and assembling appropriate packaging.

keeping packing machines clean and maintained, and making suitable adjustments as and when necessary.

identifying and reporting machine faults and stopping production lines if required.

Getting goods ready for dispatch by putting them into crates or on pallets.

keeping records and paperwork.

Packing workers usually work in production areas or warehouses. Depending on the workplace, their working environment can be noisy and dirty, or clean or air conditioned.

Protective clothing and footwear will be worn as necessary for all factory and warehouse work. Workers packing food and drink items will be required to wear masks, gloves, hats, hair nets, boots, etc, for hygiene reasons.

Packing workers can expect to earn around 10000 to start with, and have opportunities to move up the ladder to supervisory or managerial positions and, of course, higher salaries.

A wide range of businesses employ packing workers: factories and manufacturing, warehouse and distribution firms, retailers, mail order firms, transport, haulage and freight companies, etc, etc.

Formal qualifications for entry into packing work are not usually required, but workers in the food industry will need to have hygiene certificates.

Packing worker vacancies are advertised directly by employers, or in local and regional newspapers, relevant websites, and also by Job Centre Plus and specialist recruitment agencies.
