The Role Of The Modern Aircraft Carrier

The modern aircraft carrier serves as a floating platform which is used to transport

aircraft to places where they can be utilized to project air power. The carrier essentially operates as a floating air base. It can be configured with type specific aircraft depending on the mission that the navy wants to accomplish. It can also be configured to carry helicopters to ferry ground troops into and out of a military operation.

The presence of the carrier is feared because it carries such a tremendous amount of firepower. Modern navies make carrier warfare and carrier destruction their highest priority. Tactically you cannot afford to allow carriers to operate unhindered in or close to your territory if you are the opposing force because they will cause tremendous disruption to your operation by the tremendous amount of devastation that they cause.

Carriers can also be used to exert air power over land areas. This is primarily the way that they have been utilized since WWII. During WWII they operated primarily in naval force on force battles, but if they can gain close enough access to the land mass of the opposing force they can essentially be used as a base for air operations.

The carrier adds a unique flexibility to the naval task force in that it can speedily transport troops and aircraft from one point to another. It adds a range which can only be matched by intercontinental ballistic missiles. In addition, the navy has carriers located in strategic points around the globe at all times so that it does not take much time at all to project naval power into an area. We have already addressed the lethality that they can quickly project into an area so lets suffice it to say that they can quickly deliver devastating power to almost any point on the globe.

Super Carriers can operate for extended periods of time in waters around the globe as those built in the United States are nuclear powered. This gives them an even more extended range and effectiveness of operation.

Newly built United States Aircraft Carriers will utilize a technology known as the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System rather than the steam driven catapult system which we have seen up until now.

The carriers biggest weakness is that it doesnt have a lot of capability to defend itself from attack, and it is somewhat unwieldy because of its size. Normally carriers have to be accompanied by a number of support ships because of this. The resulting force is called a carrier group and its size is determined by several factors. Some of them are the distance that the carrier will have to travel, the time that it will be at sea, and its specific mission.

Carrier groups will be composed of ships whose primary job is; the defense of the carrier, supply ships to carry supplies and equipment for the carrier and its crew, and other ships or submarines that may be required to screen for and block enemy vessels from access to the carrier force.

The Aircraft Carrier is the most valuable single type of ship in the US Navy. It will always be around although its form may be altered in the future, and stopping it will always be a priority for opposing navies. Military Ring Express
