The Romance And Utility Of A Buck Knife
The story of the Buck knife blends romance, craftsmanship
, and innovation. "Buck Knife" is a registered trademark, but has come to mean any knife that resembles the company's most revolutionary design, the folding knife with a blade that pivots back into the handle and locks when in an open position.
If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Buck knives are praised above all others. In 1964, the company developed and introduced the folding, lock blade knife which almost all pocket knives are, no matter who manufactures them. The term buck knife has come to mean any folding knife. Another widely known Buck innovation is the survival knife featured in the Rambo movies.
It all began when Hoyt H. Buck was a boy apprentice in a blacksmith shop in Idaho. He discovered how to heat metal farm tools in such a way as to give them a sharp and long lasting edge. Later, as a man, he made knives from old files, stamping each with his last name, Buck. These early knives are now rare collector items, as are other limited edition knives the company has continued to release.
Buck became nationally known during World War II, when he began making knives for soldiers in a church basement. The business was started as H. H. Buck & Son in 1947 and incorporated in 1963. The name is so well known since the release of their signature folding knife in 1964 that many will be surprised to learn how recently it was that this family business changed history.
Buck knives have been designed for hunters, farmers, Navy Seals, the US Army, and anyone else that needs a tool that will cut, scrape, stab, slice, chop, or slash. They have become an icon, with art knives created for the estates of John Wayne and Elvis Presley, national brands like Chevy and Harley Davidson, organizations such as the National Rifle Association and the Boy Scouts of America, and state anniversaries and bicentennials. There are official Buck t-shirts, hats, and toys.
It all grew around the superior quality and functionality of the knives themselves, of course. Known for being up to the serious tasks of outdoor life, these knives are guaranteed not to break under normal use, for as long as the original owner has the tool. A knife should last a lifetime, the company says. The knives are often passed on to another generation, in perfectly serviceable condition.
A Buck knife is an American tradition, the perfect gift for a boy who reaches the heady age of twelve or so, when his father thinks he is mature enough to have a knife of his own. Nowadays, men and women, too, will still have either their first knife or the fond memory of it.
