The Roots Of Modern Day Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has its roots in the Japan of over a hundred years ago, but it has found its way to the global stage. Even political commentators like to use it as a metaphor for how public figures wriggle out of tough situations. The real history and evolution of the sport, however, really illustrate how unique this sport is and why it has risen to prominence. In turn-of-the-century Japan, Judo was one of many martial arts practiced by the populace. One such practitioner was Mitsuyo Maeda. He became a specialist in the form and eventually seized the opportunity to move to Brazil in 1914. There, he received the help of a member of the Gracie family and taught Jiu Jitsu to his sons as a sign of gratitude. From there, the history of the sport would take a drastic turn. The sons ran with their newfound knowledge. They began teaching the art in Brazil, near Rio de Janeiro. Eventually, Helio, the youngest of the Gracie brothers, adapted it into a form more familiar to modern practitioners and fans. From there, the family specialized in this uniquely Brazilian martial art.The family continued to develop the form over the next few decades. The focus remained on grappling techniques, submissions holds and defensive positions on the ground. Over the years, the Gracies developed unique guard positions and submissions. This came to be known as Gracie Jiu Jitsu and, eventually, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a term that encompasses the different variations taught across the world. But the real moment when the sport broke out onto the global arena was when Royce Gracie premiered at the UFC, or Ultimate Fighting Championship. Royce became the most prominent star in the early 90's as the sport matured. The skill and relatively unknown techniques did not go unnoticed. Many fighters took up the sport and sought training in Brazil and elsewhere.Over the last 15 years, Jiu Jitsu has taken its place as one of the most prominent fighting styles in many MMA leagues. While any style is acceptable, Jiu Jitsu is strongly represented among the best fighters in the world. It is still taught at its source, but now there are training camps the world over.On the world stage, the rock or rap intros used by fighters might seem alien to the sport, but many of the traditions live on. Many fighters still enter the ring following formalities set down by practitioners almost a century ago. Most also don the Gi, the traditional uniform of Jiu Jitsu fighters, whether they are allowed to wear them in the actual fight or not.To the novice, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can often seem like two people on a mat grimacing without really accomplishing much. However, there is a reason it is one of the most revered martial arts among professionals now. This sport has come of age in the modern world by holding on to its most effective elements and adapting new techniques with time. As it continues to gain prominence and popularity, this fighting style still has more secrets and excitement to reveal to those who practice it.Get your high quality yet affordable Mma Gear products.
