The Ryder Cup 2010 | Can Europe defeat USA ?
The Rider Cup History:
The Rider Cup History:
The very first Ryder Cup was played in 1927 and in those days was a game between the USA and the British PGA. It was held in Worcester, Massachusetts. The USA ran out easy winners but Britain won their first tournament on home soil at Leeds two years later.
However, the history of the cup dates back to an informal match between the two countries in 1921 at Gleneagles in Scotland, which the British team won. A second unofficial match was played in 1926, shortly before the Open Golf Championship, and again the British won.
In 1973, the Great Britain team was extended to include players from Ireland and in 1979 it was extended further to become a European team. This was in the days of American dominance of the trophy, winning it every time from 1959 to 1983. The first victory as a European team was in 1985 at the Belfry and that was Europe's first win of eight in the twelve most recent tournaments.
Ryder Cup 2010 Live StreamEurope vs USA
Europe and the USA tee off for the 2010 Ryder Cup Matches on Friday 1 October 2010 at the Celtic Manor Resort golf course in Newport, Wales. The USA go in the tournament having won or retained the Ryder Cup in twenty-six of the thirty-seven times it has been played. Despite that, Europe are firm favourites to win the trophy on home soil.
The USA are the holders after winning comprehensively at the Valley Golf Club in Kentucky two years ago, but before that Europe had won the trophy three times in a row, thrashing the Americans eighteen and a half to nine and a half twice, once on each side of the Atlantic
Ryder Cup Format
There are twenty-eight matches to be played and thus twenty-eight points up for grabs. However, as the USA are the holders, they only need fourteen points to retain the trophy. For Europe to take the trophy, they must win it, so they need fourteen and a half points fourteen points each and the USA hold the trophy for another two years.
Eight points are awarded on each of the first two days, which both follow the same format of four fourball matches in the morning and four foursomes in the afternoon. In fourballs, each of the players plays his own ball but in foursomes they hit alternate shots with the same ball.
The real excitement of the Ryder Cup comes on the final day when all twelve players from each team are in action playing twelve head-to-head matchplay singles.
