The Safer Reflective Dog Collar
If your pet is an outdoor pet then it is imperative to have a reflective dog collar on them at all times
. Even outdoor cats should have this type of collar on them at all times. The risk of an outdoor pet being hit by a car is doubled against those pets that remain indoors. It is also suggested to have an identification tag on that collar.
If your dog or cat is wearing this type of collar then if they decide to run from the house they will be easier to spot. The collar will not only make them more visible to drivers but also to you. When trying to chase a pet at night, it will be a great help if their collar reflects the light of your flashlight.
Every year more pets are lost to hit and run accidents. A good way to prevent this tragedy is by making your more pet visible to drivers. This is the same concept as people wearing reflective shoes, shirts and hats when they go running at night. It is just a very simple way to prevent a driver from missing the animal as it runs across the street.
Generally, these collars are not that much more than a regular collar. As most people would agree, spending a little extra money for more protection is a sound investment. Most pet owners know that a dog or cat really becomes a member of the family. No one wants to lose their family member to an accident that could easily be prevented.
If choking on the collar is a concern then there are break away collars. These are really good for cats. They tend to get into situations where they are snagged on a bush or tree. Dogs can run into the same problems. If it is a medium to large dog then they are more able to dislodge themselves as opposed to an animal with less weight.
As a pet owner that walks their dog at night it might be considered more safe for you if your dog has a reflective collar. The more visibility to drivers from both you and your dog increases your safety. There are so many careless drivers that will test message while driving. This type of visual hint can catch their eye better as opposed to no reflective gear.
Do not be lulled into a false sense of security if the neighborhood is well lit. Even though this does provide more safety it should not be used as an excuse not to use reflecting gear. Many pedestrian accidents still happen in a well lit neighborhood. Even on the sidewalk there is still the danger of a driver hitting you and your pet.
Your pet might be uncomfortable with wearing a collar all of the time at first. After awhile they will become use to it. If it is a behavior that your pet is having to learn for the first time then try to ease them into it. Some training techniques would be comforting them after stopping them from trying to remove the reflective dog collar. Also try to remove the collar, and then put the collar back on them followed by a treat. This way the pet knows that this behavior is being rewarded for wearing the new collar. Your pet might feel a little resentment at first, but they do not know what a big favor that you are doing for them and their safety.
