The Same Image Rendered By Different Artists
The Same Image Rendered By Different Artists
The room is silent, except for the blues music playing softly on a small boom box and the sound of scratching. Pencils, pastel crayons and paint brushes stroke across paper as 17 artists, arranged in a circle, all strive to capture the same image in their own way. Looking upward, a dance instructor sits as the subject in the middle of the canvasses.
Around her are artists, some focus on the model's upswept hair and strong features. The others decide to draw her limbs in long strokes or in soft, shaded strokes. One painter from Crystal Lake aims to capture movement, and she does this by superimposing watercolor outlines across the canvas. She earns her living from painting landscapes, leaving her only the group's weekly sessions during which to try new techniques and practice figure drawing.
People do not associate rigor and studiousness with art the way they do with music. She feels elated about how the work turned out, upon a quick inspection. When a portrait connects with a viewer through the subject's face and figure, it is deemed great, but greatness in art is rather random, attacking during practice or after long hours of study.
Two years ago another female artist returned to the group after immersing herself in the business sector, and to this day she specializes only in portraiture. Painting portraits was always her favorite. For her, these paintings are about understanding and then translating an expression onto canvas. She paints the confident model using bold colors, dark green, blue, yellow and white, that other artists would hesitate to use.
What the artist sees is more than the colors of one's face. Tones created by light complete the picture, from cool greens and blues to warm yellows and whites. She says she is just attempting to ape the style of Renoir. Both live sittings and photographs will do for an artist on commission. With a photograph, the patron saves time, but with a live sitting, the patron gains a portrait that more accurately reflects his personality. The artist who can adequately capture any personality on canvas is truly great. This is because people show their true selves only momentarily. Her goal goes beyond mimicking a photograph. Her paintings are better, she feels, when she can express the subject's inner beauty.
Another challenge for artists is reconciling their impressions with how the patron wants to be shown. With bright colors, the portrait looks even better.
