Whether you're a consumer or in the business of selling things, there are two tactics that you should be aware of. Namely scarcity and or time pressure. Let me explain. You will have seen a sale that says something like: Hurry! Only 3 left! This is a scarcity tactic. The seller is making you hurry to purchase (because there are only 3 left and if 3 other people choose to buy ahead of you then they will be gone). It doesn't really matter that he may have a truck load outside, he is trying to create a sense of urgency, to tip you over the edge, towards the buying decision. If he adds some time pressure too (must be sold today, offer closes in 1 hour etc.) then the 'ditherers' become buyers. It's as simple as that.

This is a tactic that is used in Internet Marketing over and over again. Quite laughable really because the time and scarcity are artificially created to encourage the 'stampede'. But it works. Again and again.

So, if you're a consumer. Be aware of these tactics. See them for what they are. Tricks to sell you things. Remove yourself from the grips of the time or scarcity vice and then see the offer for what it really is (it still may be great value).
