, will reveal that this interesting seaside town -- which was composed of two communities, an upper half and a lower half, served well as a fishing and farming town for a number of years. The lower part of Sheringham, which sits up against the sea, was known far and wide for its fishing output. The upper half contributed through farming as well.

This division of labor between fishing and farming held steady throughout most of the town's history, especially fishing. When the railways made their entrance into the region in the late 19th century and early 20th century, the town found it easier to send its fishing product to market. London, in particular, valued the town's crab and lobster output.

Eventually, the fishing industry went into decline. At one point, Sheringham played host to over 200 small fishing boats, though that number has shrunk considerably. Today, around eight boats of the single-fisherman type sail the waters around the town. However, Sheringham made good use of the rails and developed into a sort of hybrid fishing/shop-and-market community.

Most of Sheringham's most architecturally or historically-significant buildings come from a spurt of development that took place in the latter part of the 19th century and early part of the 20th. There are a number of interesting versions that are made with roofs and shingling composed of flint, though not in the style seen in other parts of Norfolk, the county in which Sheringham resides.

There are several other interesting items held within the town, including its lifeboats. These search and rescue-type watercraft were seen in great number in many English seaside communities for decades. Today, Sheringham has four original boats, all in excellent condition. One is even sail-powered. The others are all motorized and from various eras in the 20th century.

Like many other towns in Britain, Sheringham focuses much of its commerce activity along a single high street. There, a number of shops and stores abound, some selling antiques and bric-a-brac while others sell more modern day articles. On Saturdays, the town also plays host to a very active market, with many high street vendors setting up tables or booths, marketing their wares.

The county in which Sheringham resides, Norfolk, has a current population exceeding 851,000 people. It sits in the east of England, in country that's mostly low-lying in nature. Much of its border sits up against the North Sea, and there's been a human presence in the county since before the Romans came to the island and conquered it. Norwich Cathedral, first built in the 11th century, also sits in Norfolk.
