The Seo Secret Is That There Is No Secret
Believe it or not, I do a fair amount of research for these posts
. I also have become pretty good at online research from grad school. On top of that, I obsessively and compulsively save articles that I think might be valuable for anything at a later date for reference. So when I thought a post on the secret to SEO was due, I started researching and also referred back to my library of SEO experts' posts on search engine optimization. I have links throughout this article that should be very valuable as well.
But before I delve into what you really need to know, let me mention a few things of interest that I noticed when looking at all these SEO articles.
Nearly all of them were dateless. Authors do that to hide the date because we want freshness. An article on SEO from 1997 isn't going to be much good this afternoon. But permalinks don't lie (usually), so the permalink in the URL up in the address bar revealed many times that the posts were anywhere from a few months to a few years old. I could also tell by the updates and revisions and "tips" that quite a few were past their prime.
However, most of them also had tens of thousands of shares and followers. For the most part, that came not from being a great article like Yoast's WordPress SEO(which is required reading), but their marketing, and the amount of time it had been aging and searchable. And that's sort of what I'm getting at with this post: unless you have something really amazing, dare I use the over-played word "disruptive," time and diligence are going to be your best allies for building a following for your blog or website. That makes it really hard for people like me who have no patience, so I constantly am on the lookout for the "latest" in SEO. (I urge you to have a goal of always writing something "epic" but for most of us that isn't possible on a consistent basis.)
But these date-stamps also indicate that what used to make for good on-page SEO years ago still applies today, and will still apply tomorrow, because of logic and reason.
So, alas, there isn't a big "secret" to on-page SEO. The same things that have largely always been true to build a sustainable and consistent following still apply, and actually even MORESO because of ongoing and improved search engine tweaks: Quality, time, and effort. There are off-page SEO things that you need to do as well, but I wouldn't call them "tricks." They are simply best practices that anyone can and should know about. But there certainly are black-hat marketers out there that want to make you believe there are short-cuts. There aren't.
I get into SEO best practices over on my Tips page, and will focus on Off-page SEO elsewhere, but here I want to quickly tell you what to do to rank higher, get more followers, more clicks and create something to be proud of, not embarrassed and frustrated by. These are ideas that come from the top of the heap and A-listers, with a ridiculous number of followers. They all are happy to share their best SEO methods (some for a price) but they really all boil down to the same couple of things. And while the major search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo! change the rules all the time, it's easy to see what they're going for, which is to give the person searching the best answers to their inquiry. What they use as criteria to judge exactly what that is changes frequently, but it doesn't matter if you stick to what works, because you generally shouldn't even worry about them.
So, here's what you should worry about:
Usability
Shareability
Giving readers tools to share and interact
Ease and comfort
Value
Brevity
Getting your work OUT there
These can be neatly summed up by what we marketers refer to as the Marketing Mix. The 4 P's, which they have long-been referred to are: Price, Product, Placement and Promotion.
The Product is your writing. Make it very easy to read. Use short sentences and paragraphs. Use small words when possible. Write conversationally. Edit. Edit again. This is where practice makes perfect. While you should strive to make every post "Epic" if you really want your stuff to go viral, that usually isn't possible. So just don't put out garbage. Without your product, you have nothing. So make sure it is a great, readable product! And one topic for one page.
Price: This will usually be free in the beginning, for obvious reasons. And then even when you begin getting some interest you should charge a reader's email address to access your work. If you are REALLY good, after time you can think about charging money. But you must consider the value. Even offering your work for free, is it even worth the reader's time? If not, go back to the drawing board. Be objective about this; just because you think it's great means nothing online if everyone else has already done it better, and asks for less of their time.
Placement: Post your work everywhere that makes sense. Tweet it, refer to it in comments on like blogs and web sites, and parade it around. Be proud of it and get it out there. Search engines rank things that have been shared on Twitter, Pinterest and so on, so make sure you have social media accounts set up and ready to fire. You are going to have to use social media to it's fullest. That means know when the best times are to release your work (typically 8am and 2pm on weekdays, but verify this for your niche). Know where your readers are. Place your work out there for them to share with who they know. You are going for a deep level of sharing by others, not for you to just show your site to the couple of people you know that might be interested. Get it in front of the right people! This goes back to one of the first steps in building a blog, and that's to make sure you are targeting a niche market that is active online.
And that leads us to Promotion. Promote your work shamelessly, but don't be obnoxious. Fine line, I know but find where it is and tip-toe on it. Be proud of your work and explain to people how it helps them and why they should care. Think specific benefits to others. "Because it's interesting" doesn't cut it. "Because it shows them how to easily save $50 at the grocery store in 2 simple steps" is better. Make sure others in your niche see it; that helps build links, and links help you rank higher, and ranking higher gets you more visitors, and...well, you know the rest.
So, when you gather up your thoughts and research for writing that next article, instead of working to pull one over on search engines, concentrate on writing a high-quality piece. Then show it off, see what worked and what didn't, and repeat. Make sure the right people take notice, and the cream will rise to the top.
