The Sheep: One Of The First Domesticated Animals
The sheep (Ovis Aries) is a herbivorous domestic mammals of the family Bovidae
, sub-family Caprinae and the genus Ovis. The man raises sheep for meat, their milk, wool and skin with which it prepares a leather called roan.
It is a ruminant mammal that is present today, especially in its domesticated form, although six wild species still exist. Like all ruminants, sheep are ungulates walk on two (an even number) fingers (Cetartiodactyla). They probably descended from a mixture of sub-species of wild species of sheep (Ovis orientalis Ovis gmelini or) the westernmost, 54 chromosomes from the Middle East.
This is one of the first animals to have been domesticated and is especially valued for its wool and meat. Sheep wool and animal hair is the most widely used and is usually harvested by cutting with shears (shearing).
The sheep are raised in the world and played a central role in many civilizations. Currently, Australia, New Zealand, Patagonia and the United Kingdom are the main areas devoted to the farm.
Animal key in the history of agriculture, the sheep has a profound impact on human culture. Sheep are commonly associated with rural scenes. The sheep appears in many legends, such as the Golden Fleece and the major religions, especially the Abrahamic religions. In some rituals, sheep are used as sacrificial animals (especially among Muslims during Eid al-Adha).
Because of the proximity of this animal to man, the vocabulary around here is rich. The little sheep is a lamb (female: lamb), the female is the sheep and the male is the ram, the term refers to a castrated male sheep or a misuse case. Calving and lambing called the fold is the name of the building constructed to house the sheep. The terms "sheep paired (s)" and "pecus have long been used to describe the herds of sheep and, by analogy, human societies.
The word "sheep" is derived from * multo, a term derived from the Celtic languages and designating castrated males of the species. We find the root for instance Irish or Breton Maout molt. This term prevail even in Italian as Montone. However, the Latin name of the species was ovis, ovicula designating the sheep. The last term was derived in French sheep paired .
Ovis is now the scientific name of the genus and the species name is Aries. Was used in Gallo-Roman vervex the term to describe the "castrated male" and to refer to Aries 'ram', as demonstrated once again the term OAIE Romanian. The system appears to have been disrupted by the formal similarity with Ovum beef has led to the disappearance of ovis and its replacement by several substitutes . Gradually the term vervex ram is required and takes the meaning of sheep in the ninth century it was gradually ousted sheep paired, at least in the northern dialects. In English, the term became mutton was imported by the conquering Normans and refers only meat.
Sheep are relatively small ruminants, most often with horns on the side of the head and curly hair called wool. Domestic sheep differ from their wild cousins and ancestors in several respects, having become widely neotenic animals under the influence of man . A few primitive breeds of sheep retain some characteristics of their wild cousins, such as short tail. Depending on breed, domestic sheep may have no horns at all, horns in both sexes (as in wild sheep), or males only. Most horned breeds have a single pair.
