The Signs And Symptoms Of Hemorrhoids
You probably already know that hemorrhoids, or piles
, are unpleasant and even painful at times, but would you recognize the symptoms of hemorrhoids if you had them? If you experienced the symptoms, would you know what to do? Below is an overview of the common symptoms of hemorrhoids. Once you are able to recognize the symptoms, you are in a better position to find an effective treatment.
Pain & Itching
External
hemorrhoids are usually painful and produce itching as well. Sometimes, internal piles will only cause itching. Pain is generally caused by irritated veins. This happens when the distended veins rub against clothing or from straining with bowel movements. Bowel movements can cause pain with internal hemorrhoids as well. Prolonged sitting can also cause irritation and pain in external hemorrhoids.
Itching can sometimes be caused by the leaking of fluids that comes about as the result of hemorrhoid swelling.
The best way to handle pain is to use over-the-counter creams or lotions and eat a fiber rich diet and drink lots of water to avoid hard stools. Itching can often be relieved by properly cleaning the area and applying creams and lotions made to stop the itch of piles.
Of course, if your pain is severe then you should seek medical help rather than trying to treat the condition on your own. Extreme pain can be caused because of blood hardening inside the distended vein but you want to make sure your condition truly is caused by hemorrhoids rather than something else.
Show of Blood
hemorrhoids can cause bleeding. This appears as streaks of blood in your stools or on the toilet paper. Bleeding is common and as long as it is a small amount is nothing to worry about. However, if you pass a lot of blood or if the bleeding is persistent for a prolonged time, you should let your doctor know.
Bleeding from the rectum can be a symptom of some other serious medical conditions such as colon cancer or polyps, so it is important to have this symptom looked at if you have any doubts of its cause.
Bumps Around The Anus
Sometimes external hemorrhoids will cause some rough bumps in the affected area of the anus. Many people never notice these bumps when the condition first starts because they are so small and in an awkward location. With time the bumps can become larger as the veins fill with additional blood and swell up more. This is when external hemorrhoids can become quite painful.
The bumps should not be confused with bulges that protrude from your rectum. A bulge that does not correct itself could be a symptom of a more serious medical condition. It could also be an indication of internal hemorrhoids and something that needs treatment by a doctor.
Treating The Symptoms of Hemorrhoids
The symptoms of hemorrhoids are unpleasant, uncomfortable, and painful. They can even be scary. However with proper treatment, they can be cured and prevented. There are even natural methods that are very effective at curing hemorrhoids. Just be certain your symptoms are actually caused by hemorrhoids before you begin any type of self treatment and not caused by a more serious condition that needs to be treated by a doctor.
