The Skoda Fabia Vrs

Skoda, part of the VW Automotive Group has been working hard to resurrect its brand name and shake off its old image

. Models such as the Octavia and Fabia have helped Skoda establish itself as a modern day car manufacturer who can produce practical, economical, reliable and good looking cars.

The underpinnings of all Skoda vehicles come from a Volkswagen Group platform, so the car itself is built on good foundations. Recently Skoda has introduced some high performance variants of their model, like the Octavia VRS and the new Fabia VRS; these use high power output engines from the VW Group.

The new Skoda Fabia VRS in Dorset is based on the VW Polo GTi, its recent television adverts used the originally cake baking idea with a rock/metal cover of 'My Favourite Things', emphasising the Fabia's "meaner" attitude.

The Fabia VRS uses the same VW engine found in the Polo GTi, a 1.4 litre supercharged and turbocharged engine that produces 180bhp. As standard the VRS comes with a 7 speed DSG gearbox. The paddle shift gearbox has had a lot of praise from motoring journalists; it changes between gears very smoothly with ease and without hesitancy.

As you would expect from a hot hatch the ride is quite firm, which helps the control and composure of the car. The Fabia VRS comes with a clever electronic differential helps you make the most of the VRSs power when accelerating out of bends.

In Skodas search for a better brand image it has had to increase the level of refinement its vehicles offer. The Fabia is an excellent example of Skodas progress but there is still a lot room for improvement, the VRS lets in a lot of wind and road noise and the engine note is more noisy than tuned.
