The Sky's the Limit

Mazda has something environmentally friendly up its sleeve an all-new line of powertrains dubbed SKY

. The line-up includes the Mazda SKY-G with a direct injection gasoline engine, the Mazda SKY-D with a clean diesel engine and the Mazda SKY-Drive with automatic transmission. The powertrains form the base of Mazda's strategy to improve fuel economy by 30% by 2015.

The SKY line-up marks the beginning of Mazda's introduction of eco-friendly technologies. Gradually, there will be hybrid and pure electric vehicles added. For the moment though, Mazda is committed to improving the aspects of its vehicles that affect performance engines, transmissions and vehicle weight. The idea is to enhance driving pleasure whilst increasing safety and economy. The SKY range has an extended rev range and wider torque band that ensure power delivery is smooth and linear, whiletThe chassis is lighter and stiffer to increase ride comfort.

Mazda chose the name SKY to reflect a desire to ensure an "everlasting blue sky" under which drivers will always be able to experience the joy of driving. The concept also embodies the "sky is the limit" aspirations of Mazda's engineers as they create and produce innovative vehicles with optimum performance.

The SKY-G model will be the core powertrain in future Mazda vehicles and will be available at the beginning of 2011. The SKY-D is due to be available a little later, in 2012, and is a great opportunity for Mazda to showcase their ability to produce a non-hybrid car capable of delivering fuel economy equal to hybrids, but at a more affordable price.
