The Soft Side of the Toshiba TG01 by:Simon Drew

Hard Evidence

Hard Evidence

After warming the bench for almost a year, Toshiba's time to shine has finally arrived and it has come in the form of the new TG01. It is being touted as the most powerful and highest performing Smartphone in the market as it comes complete with a boatload of features such as full data connectivity capabilities (GPRS, EDGE, HSCSD, 3G, and WLAN), a GPS receiver, and an amazing 4.1-inch high resolution screen. The fact that the TG01 has a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor under its hood (the first mobile phone to have such a powerful processing platform on board) also does wonders for the device.

However, amidst all this glamour, Toshiba has still made it a point to equip the TG01 with the software that will match its high end features. Here's a quick look at the TG01's softer side.

User Interface

For the operating system, Toshiba has decided to stick it out with Microsoft's Windows Mobile OS. Although this operating system has had its fair share of criticism in terms of touch-friendliness, it still has a lot of strong points. One of these has to be its fully customizable home screen that provides one-click shortcut keys to the most important menu items such as media, applications, and settings. However, it still remains true that those who are looking for a touch-optimized interface may not be too fond of the TG01. Nonetheless, WinMo's latest and hopefully much improved version (Windows Mobile 6.5) is set for release very soon and we are expecting a free upgrade on the TG01 once it's out.

Applications

As expected, all the usual Windows Mobile applications can be found on the TG01 including Pocket Office, Internet Explorer Mobile, and Outlook Mobile. Another welcome addition on the TG01 is Orange Maps, which is Microsoft's direct response to Google Maps. It is actually quite a noble attempt as it provides neat features such as saving your specific location and searching for nearby establishments. However, familiarity and ease of use might still lead most users to downloading Google Maps on their TG01.

Also on board is a neat video editing application that allows users to play with their recorder videos. It comes with cool features such as photo interpolation and video storyboards which make this application quite fun to use. Users shouldn't encounter problems in outputting and saving the edited videos to the mobile's memory as it can be done with ease and with minimal lagging.
