Music originated a long time ago. Right from the days when prehistoric man realized that he could make sounds of various kinds and levels with his voice, he has been attempting to give it some sort of pattern and uniformity which was probably music at its infancy. It is quite possible that humans learnt to hum and sing even before they learnt how to speak. Maybe it is that primeval instinct that, under some circumstances, prompts us to break into a hum sub-consciously even today. It is this trait in man that lead on to produce geniuses like Bach and Beethoven. Music is considered to be divine in countries like India which produced some great saint composers who followed a unique system of music that had many parameters. This system was quite complex and required rigorous practice and unstinted devotion to attain perfection.

Archaeological findings showed that the earliest known wind instrument used by man was a crude flute made from the femur or bone of the leg of a cave bear. It is a mystery though, how the holes were drilled in. The precursor to percussions could have started with clapping of hands and beating stones and pieces of wood for varying effects. These, of course could have doubled as tools and weapons as well. Gradually wood and metal started being used and musical instruments got a definite form and were being made with specifications. The exact origin of stringed instruments is indeed a mystery, however, the people Mesopotamia and the Chinese showed a preference for stringed instruments. The violin, a source of enchanting music was first used in Italy. It is believed that the violin evolved from the fiddle and lira da braccio in the 16th Century.

Music had various styles like classical, art, rhythm, rock etc. Classical had a kind of soothing effect and was patronized by a select few who liked slow paced soft music. To the same set of people, Rhythm and Rock would have sounded slightly outrageous. Country music though is liked by people of all walks of life for its simplicity and appeal. Popular music or Pop as it was called was a rage as early as the 19th Century. The other lesser know genres of music were Melodic, Reggae, Dub and related forms.

Hip hop or rap was quite popular in the 70s as also Punk which lost its popularity with the collapse of The Sex Pistols. Disco borrowed liberally from the music of the 70s and fused with techno to be called Tesko in England.

The current New Age Rock that has stormed the scene is offered by popular bands like Linkin Park, Nickelback, Skrillex, Korn and Metallica and their albums are most sought after and the combined sales reach astronomical figures. Save Me and She Says from Heres to the Mourning have kept the charts going. Most of these albums are downloaded via Verizon FiOS Internet, one of the High Speed Internet service providers in the country. The need for having to walk down to the music store to check out the latest offering and to purchase the hits was dispensed with due to its ready availability on most web ports that were exclusively designed to cater to this need. With samples and short video runs available for streaming and the ease with which it could be accessed has worked wonders for the music industry as a whole. While the other forms of music are still in vogue with quite a few people, the current trend has been in the favor of the various offshoots of New Age Rock.
