The Spookiest Cities This Halloween

Europe may not have the same Halloween traditions as its American friends across the pond

, but now more than ever, cities across the continent are celebrating the spookiest day on the calendar: October 31st. And why shouldn't they? With ancient castles, sombre architecture and eerie atmosphere that can only be attributed to a history that dates back centuries, a European city is the ideal destination to be spooked this Halloween. Fortunately, the Holiday Discount Centre has plenty of city breaks to choose from.

A veritable treasure trove for those in search of a frighteningly good Halloween, Prague in the Czech Republic could have been designed for this holiday alone. A city shadowed by Gothic architecture, even the bridges that earned it its nickname as the City of Bridges cast an eerie glow. The Old Town Square is a nod to the Gothic style, and whilst the pastel-coloured buildings add an air of fairy-tale magic, the Gothic Tn Cathedral that overlooks the square sheds some light on why this is the setting of so many ghoulish legends that have been passed down the centuries.

In the Old Jewish Quarter is the Old Jewish Cemetery, where the dead were buried in layers only 12,000 or so tombstones are visible, but it's believed that around 100,000 Jewish people were laid to rest here. Add to this the Museum of Medieval Torture Instruments and the Sedlec Ossuary, where tens of thousands of human bones decorate a chapel beneath a church, and there's no doubt that Prague is one of Europe's spookiest cities.

Although the French don't make a big deal about Halloween there are a few decorations and many bars and clubs promote themed parties Paris lends itself to being suitably spooky on the scariest night of the year. A must for those visiting the iconic city is, alongside the catacombs, The Paris Ghost Tour. Comprising a walk and pub crawl, the tour takes you around the capital whilst a guide regales visitors with the veridic tales of assassination, cannibalism and Satanism, with, of course, a few ghost stories thrown in for good measure.

For the younger ones, there's no better place to experience all Halloween has to offer than Disneyland Paris. With special holidays available through the Holiday Discount Centre, the theme park is completely immersed in the Halloween theme, with decorations, dressed-up actors and even a daily Villain Parade making it truly one of a kind.

Romania's Transylvania, famous as the home of Dracula, is one of the scariest places for its location and landscape alone. However, with a turbulent history, imposing landmarks and the growing appetite for this unique night, there's no better place to experience Halloween in all its glory than London, the spookiest city of all.
