The Terran Confederacy
The Terran Confederacy
Hundreds of years ago, prison ships coming from Earth carrying dissidents lost their baring and ventured far off into the desolate Koprulu Sector. The ships violently landed on the planets of Tarsonis, Moria, and Umoja. Deemed irretrievable by the government which sent them on the expedition, the malcontents set up colonies around the sector. Tarsonis, the biggest colony, was erected by the Confederacy - a strong, yet highly tyrannical government faction.
The government's oppressive acts caused great pain throughout the colony. Eventually, Arcturus Mengsk was inspired to act and thus emerged as a leader to fight against the autocratic regime. He created a small militia of soldiers named the Sons of Korhal. They worked to take over the Confederate and free the Koprulu Sector.
The Invasion
While the Sons of Korhal fought to take over the Confederate, a more powerful force threatened the terran race. Enormous ships caring an alien species, called protoss, invaded the sector and stationed itself around Chau Sara, the Confederate planet. Seemingly without reason, the protoss alien ships burned Chau Sara's surface and left.
On another front, the terrans were being attacked by a second enemy, the zerg - an alien species with the imperative of stomping out all life. Knowing of the zerg's operations, the protoss ships looked to kill them off before they could multiply across the region. The zerg had already claimed Mar Sara as a breeding ground for their army. Jim Raynor, a Marshall of the colony, fought to protect his fellow terrans as his government left the entire race to fall in the hands of the zerg.
Sons of Korhal
Facing the menacing zerg and protoss armies, the Sons of Korhal stepped in to fight off the enemies and save thousands of terrans. Let down by the loathsome acts of the Confederacy, Raynor joined the Sons of Korhal to fight. There, he was introduced to Sara Kerrigan, second in command to Arcturus Mengsk. Kerrigan used to be a ghost operative for the Confederacy. The two of them became very close.
Tarsonis
As the zerg impinged on the fate of the terran race, the Confederate battle grew larger. Sickened by his government's acts, Arcturus Mengsk broke into a fit of rage, placing devices on Tarsonis, the capital world of the Confederacy, that would allow the zerg to wipe out the terran population. Protoss Executor Tassadar stepped in to kill the zerg and free the terrans. Mengsk disagreed with this and ordered for Kerrigan to terminate the protoss. As Kerrigan fought off the protoss, the zerg infiltrated Tarsonis, killing the entire population. When Mengsk accomplished his objectives, he withdrew from the planet, leaving Kerrigan to fend for herself.
Disgusted by Mengsk's betrayal, Raynor immediately abandoned the rebels and raced to Tarsonis to rescue Kerrigan, but there was no one left on the planet's surface.
The Terran Dominion
Freed by his vengeance on the Confederacy, Mengsk rebuilt the morale of his defeated terran followers and shaped a new government, the Terran Dominion. His policy would eventually transpire into a criminal system like the former Confederacy. As his power grew, so did Raynor's hate for Mengsk.
The Infestation of Aiur
Captured by the Overmind and its Zerg Swarm, Kerrigan was brought to Char, a volcanic planet near the Koprulu Sector. There, she was mutated into the alien Queen of Blades - a creature with enormous psionic power.
Meanwhile, a second party of protoss warriors emerged to help Tassadar. Zeratual and his Dark Templar worked together with Tassadar to overcome the zerg infestation. However, their fight with the Swarm left them vulnerable, and the Overmind located Aiur, the secret homeworld of the protoss. The zerg swiftly seized it as the Overmind rooted itself into Aiur's planetary surface.
The Death of the Overmind
Fortunately, Zeratul was able to show Tassadar how he could fuse his powers with the void. With this superpower, Tassadar sacrificed himself and drove his ship straight into the massive Overmind, obliterating it entirely. With the zerg having reaped total destruction on Aiur, the protoss had to leave and migrate to Shakuras, the Dark Templar homeworld. Then, with the Overmind crushed, Kerrigan (Queen of Blades) took full rein over the zerg.
Looking Forward
In the meantime, Raynor was building up a small army of rebel forces to fight against Megsk and his Terran Dominion. To reduce Raynor's threat, Mengsk used propaganda to villainize his efforts. This has placed Raynor and his forces in a frustratingly distant position to attack Mengsk.
