The State Flag of Nevada

The state flag of Nevada as flown and displayed from flag poles in our day, displays a blue colored field or background with a silver colored star in the upper part of the state banner. The star is surrounded with the text "Nevada" and "Battle Born" in a golden yellow color.

Nevada officially became a state during the Civil War of America and (because of its natural resources) is referred to at times as the "Silver State."

Interestingly, the very first Nevada flag was produced or made by John Sparks (Governor of the state at that time, back during the early years of the 20th century) and Harry Day, who served as a Colonel. The design of the flag was and is based on the state's natural resources, which include both gold and silver. The color of the banner's background however, was based on the blue that is displayed on the national flag of the United States of America.

Those that have visited and traveled through this fascinating U.S. state, will affirm that historic flags are flown from all types of objects, including flag poles throughout this territory. Located in the southwestern area of the U.S., Nevada also is part of the so called "Mountain States." Even though the state's largest city if Las Vegas, and surprising to many, Carson City is its capital.

The current flag design ties all the way back to a design competition that was held in 1926. At the time, the winning flag design (produced by Louis Shellback) was changed slightly because of the state legislature. The 2 houses disagreed over the placement of the word Nevada on the state banner. Following a compromise, a law was signed that officially marked the adoption of the flag of Nevada.

Interestingly, and a few decades later, however, a researcher discovered that the bill signed by the then sitting governor at the time, did not properly reflect the agreement of 1929. Another law that was produced in '91, designated that "Nevada" should appear below the silver colored star and right above the sagebrush...
