The Story Of The Seaside

A trip to the coast is as synonymous with British life as roast beef with Yorkshire pudding

. We have headed for the seaside in droves every summer time for hundreds of years. People love the British coast and everything that goes with it; sticks of rock, fish and chips, ice cream cones and stripy deck chairs! It has been annual ritual for generations of fathers to be buried in the sand by their kids and everyone loves a game of crazy golf.

The Victorians were really big on trips to the seaside and men and women can be seen grinning away in countless black and white snapshots (they were usually serious). Of course, things were a little different back then... the scariest ride on offer was the carousel, the bathing suits covered three-quarters of your body and cafes would bring pots of tea to the holidaymakers on the beach.

Holiday makers continued to head for the coast every summer and in the fifties and sixties, coach holidays became incredibly popular. Suddenly, more and more families could get away to the seaside, even if they did not have their own car. This all helped to reduce the once great divide between rich and poor. Now just about everyone could afford a holiday! Children would be in raptures over the coastal attractions; funfairs, donkey rides, coconut shies, amusement arcades and, of course, the beach. Even the poorest of children could play quite happily all day long. There were sandcastles to build, crabs to find and starfish to stare at in wonder.

But the eighties began to see a reduction in seaside visitors. Cheap flights meant that many families were jetting off to foreign climes for their holidays. The Great British seaside was suddenly not as busy as it had been and many local traders feared the worst. However, after a few more years, things would begin to pick up again.

Over recent years, the crowds have been returning to our coasts. A number of different factors have been responsible for this. A grim economic climate has meant that families have less spare money, air fares have gone up in accordance with greener living and the threat of terrorism is never far from our minds. These reasons have all led to a renewed interest in our own holiday destinations and many more families are choosing to stay within Britain.

Even coach holidays are becoming more popular again. Not only are they great for people without transport, but they are also much cheaper to use than the family car. They are also a far more environmentally friendly mode of transport, vastly reducing the amount of traffic on our roads.

It would seem that the Great British seaside is in full swing once again and that a whole new generation of children will be enjoying its delights. For too long our beaches were quiet and not many sandcastles stood atop the sand, but not anymore. The long overlooked British seaside has well and truly returned.
