The Superintendent's Big Decision

The Superintendent's Big Decision
The Engineering School at the Hyde Park Education Complex has achieved AYP requirements for this past year. I have received verbal confirmation by The Engineering School Headmaster, Mweusi Willingham, and also the senior teachers that currently teach here at The Engineering School. If we have been achieving the AYP requirements, which proves we're not low performers and certainly this school's performance isn't low, why would she shut down all three schools and also trying to state an unproven fact that all three schools in the HPEC are underachieving? Why not turn the HPEC into one school?
For the freshmen that just enrolled to start their high school year here at The Engineering School, I would say, they received the message of Hyde Park High is being shut down' as a terrible impact because all the work his/her parents had to do to get him/her here at The Engineering School and now those Freshmen have to transfer? Most of them would have wasted one year here as if it were a demo: to see if he/she was comfortable with being at this school and that's not what high school is about!
Every year at The Engineering School, students with severe needs are placed at our school. We love these students, but it creates a serious problem when trying to meet AYP. This is because after we meet certain standards, our achievements and recognition are erased from those standard levels. This is due to those students with special needs who take a special test called the MCAS-Alt which is a portfolio of everything that was taught to the students throughout the year. Even though these students have passed the MCAS Alt, when their grades are input into the MCAS grading system, he/she receives a "0." My question is why these students can't receive a passing grade even though he/she is not taking the regular MCAS. Also, there are students' who have learning disabilities that prevent him/her from performing to the best of their ability being placed at our successfully achieving school causing us to lower our success almost to a failing status and leave us in a place recognized as "under-performance." Therefore, we are left with having the prestige to be called an "under-performing" school. Every year this happens, we struggle to re-gain that success to an even higher extent than the previous succession.
I feel whether the Hyde Park Education Complex is achieving or not, Dr. Carol R. Johnson, knew she was going to shut down Hyde Park High School long before she released the information about it. So, if we (The Engineering School) are underachieving, why didn't she let anyone know? Not just speaking on the students' behalf, but also the teachers and the headmasters here at The Engineering School, Social Justice Academy, and Community Academy of Science and Health; the whole Hyde Park Education Complex. She knew the Hyde Park Education Complex would be closed but she still let students enroll their freshman year at Hyde Park High School.
Personally, being a senior here at The Engineering School, I feel there is no excuse to move forward with a plan without a back-up plan. I feel as if I have to represent a school in the sense of it being a house or an apartment full of children who have to hear the fact that we are being evicted soon. If the Superintendent continues with her plan of shutting down Hyde Park High School, not only will this be my last year on both terms that I am a senior and also that the school will be shut down, but also this will be everyone's last year here at the Hyde Park Education Complex, whether you're a senior, junior, sophomore, freshman, teacher (including Assistant and Co-Teachers), headmaster, faculty, or staff.
My mission statement for anyone and everyone here at the Hyde Park Education Complex is to be a role model for each other, so when you get to the place where another is at, you can feel proud and say, "I am once where you stood. I'm proud of you, but I don't want to be like you; I want to be better than you!" Everyone is going to reach a goal in life whether it's his/her dream, mission, or objective. One thing you have to consider is who has reached your goal before you, what are you going to do that he/she hasn't done already, and what you can do to improve, enhance, and upgrade your goal.
