Timber has been in use for centuries as a raw material in the production of a variety of goods. There is even a modern-day British performance car that features a chassis created from timber and another (favoured by the Queen) that has a richly finished interior where timber plays an important part. Possibly the most well-known timber constructed vessels ever, were the timber boats of the Vikings. Earlier agricultural accessories were fashioned from timber and the ox wagon of days gone by was mainly made of timber, including the wheels. Many a cart and sleigh were built from timber as were early drinking troughs and also Jack and Jill's pail was made of timber. Furniture, through the ages was made of timber with many very fine antique pieces still surviving as popular and expensive collector's goods.

Modern day timber products stay as popular as were products of way back when. Fine home furniture of quality and wonder is still mainly manufactured from timber, with many different pieces made of rare indigenous hard woods, fetching very high prices. In stately homes and rooms of variation, timber is still hugely prized as a way of panelling the walls. Windows and doors built from timber are very popular, with some doors being real works of art crafted by popular timber artists. Also other art items of beauty are crafted from timber, such as bowls and other practical items. African art has continually favoured timber as an art medium, particularly in the carving of objects and the generating of ceremonial masks. Timber of top quality and beauty, like Turkish walnut can be used to fashion the butts of high-priced shotguns and hunting rifles from, that are also collector's parts.

Kitchen furniture made of solid timber is a much valued item in timber items, albeit almost too expensive nowadays, not only on account of the cost of timber, but also the expense of labour of skilled tradesmen. Spectacular timber and the timber of threatened species of indigenous trees have become costly and is becoming scarce so any timber products with such materials as a base are promptly out of reach of so many people, today, while years back these timbers were used to make every day user's items. Although timber is undoubtedly a environmentally friendly resource, much of it is being wilfully stripped for income, ala West Africa, or being destroyed to be replaced by agricultural land.

Timber products of top quality, in future, therefore may become a scarce item and because of that the real tradesmen of timber may be endangered in their craft and existence.
