The Sweet Process Of Making Honey
It has been said that honey is the most abundant natural sweetener on Earth
. All over the world millions have enjoy the taste of this sugary concoction in their meals, in their drinks, on bread, on pancakes, in their desserts. Many even enjoy eating honey raw, as syrup or as a natural cure for that sore and itchy throat.
There are simply so many uses for honey, which often begs the question: Where does it come from?
Honey is the byproduct of a series of events in nature. It starts out as nectar in flowers, which is then harvested by honeybees and then turned into honey. Nectar is a sugar-rich liquid, consisting of about eighty percent water, mixed with complex sugars, and is produced in plants by the nectar glands.
Some examples of plants that produce nectar in North America are flowers like clovers, berry bushes, dandelions, and fruit tree blossoms. Honeybees visit between an average of 100 and 1500 flowers to get enough nectar to turn into honey.
Once the bees return to the hive, the nectar is then passed on to the other worker bees. The worker bees suck the nectar from the honeybee's stomach using their mouths. They then digest the nectar using enzymes that break down complex sugars into simple sugars. This process is necessary before the honey can be put in a
bee honey jar.
The broken down sugars are then stored in cells throughout the honey comb. At this point, the nectar still has a fairly high amount of water, which causes the natural yeasts to ferment the sugars. But the honey still has a lot to go before it ends up in a
bear honey bottle.
Because of this the bees fan the nectar with their wings, which creates a draft and helps the excess water to evaporate. The nectar thus becomes thicker, and the high sugar concentration deters fermentation. The honey at this stage is called ripe honey. This type of honey can have a long shelf life if removed from the hive and properly sealed immediately. Honey can then be processed and sold in containers or any
bee honey jar that the manufacturing company chooses to use.
