The Tablet Computer And Its Implications For Creative Interfacing
There is no doubt that, since the huge and expensive machines that were first constructed in the 1940s, computers have certainly come a long way
. In 1943 the size and cost of these machines, and their limited capabilities, prompted Thomas J Watson to make the famous prediction that there would only ever be a worldwide market for maybe five computers. The present day has certainly proved otherwise, as now it seems that the majority of people, at least from western society, come into contact with a computer once a day.
Not only are computers far more accessible these days, in terms of their size and costs, but they are also far more versatile machines too. Software programmers are becoming increasingly clever with what they can allow computers to do, and as these developments continue it seems that there is a growing number of practical applications for the modern computer, from word processing to video editing. As the capabilities of computers broaden it seems that an increasing number of individuals and businesses are becoming dependant on them for productivity, despite the fact that they can still be temperamental machines.
Aside from the innovations in software there has also been new hardware technology being developed, some of which has some pretty serious implications for a number of different sectors. While computers are powerful and versatile machines theres no doubt that for a number of different fields and mouse and keyboard simply doesnt provide enough control for certain projects. For instance graphic designers will frequently use wacom tablets to draw with, for anyone who doesnt know this is essentially a pen and pad that connects to your computer via USB. With pressure sensitivity expression is far easier, however many people do find it strange drawing on the pad and looking at the screen simultaneously.
Probably one of the biggest innovations in recent years for interfacing with computers is the touch screen, although tablet computers still seems to be something of a novelty computer, lacking any sort of true purpose, there is no doubt that they hold some interesting implications for a number of fields. For instance they could solve the problem mentioned earlier where wacom tablet users struggle to draw on the pad whilst looking at their computer screen. The touch screen also has implications for creative control in sectors such as music, with electronic music really taking off it seems that being able to control computers with freedom and expression is becoming increasingly important for creating performances that do not become rigid and predictable.
