When's the last time you looked in a mirror and spontaneously launched into an advertisement for soap? If we're all being honest, it's only been days. Because you and I both know that there's something to that work -- to getting in front of a camera and selling something solely by virtue of our charm and charisma -- that is very, very appealing. A good talent agency should be a gauge to how realistic that dream is.

A lot of the agencies will make promises they have no intention of delivering. Because there's money to be made by these unscrupulous agencies who profit off your dreams. So before you sign with anyone, make sure and do your homework -- figure out what is realistic and what isn't. Don't sign your life away!

Auditions, Etc.

You will need to get model composites made, though. These are the industry's business card -- what the agency uses to find you work. You can work with the agency to get these made, but again, look out for hidden costs, registration fees, that kind of thing. A good agency will be fully licensed and have a recognizable client list, so make sure you check those off your list before you proceed.

An important discussion to have at this point is that fundamental existential question: What do you want to be when you grow up? Or at least what kind of work do you want to do? Advertising? Runway work? Radio? TV or film? You may well be more suited to one kind than another, and this is why it's important to have a good relationship with your agency as you wade into this world of decisions.

The Right Look is in the Mirror

And if you look in the mirror and think maybe you don't have the exotic looks that make a good model, rest assured that agencies are looking for people of all types, with every kind of look, from child to adult. It's impossible to know what the casting director will be looking for, so it never hurts to put yourself out there. You may have the look the world is looking for. So get ready to work, and work hard.

If you've got the right agency, the right attitude, and the desire to really go out and do it, there may be a job in the modeling or acting world for you. It's important to have the right friends in this industry, and of course the agency is where you start. So do your homework and look for someone honest, and don't be afraid to ask questions or compare agencies. The right one, the honest one, will emerge and be willing to help you achieve.
