The Tallest Apartment Towers In The Uk

Up until a few years ago, the word tower, when used in reference to a residential dwelling

, brought up unpleasant images of the old tower blocks that had been built in London in the years immediately following World War II. Designed as a quick fix for the housing problem created by Hitlers bombing of the city, these massive towers were at first popular because of their spectacular views, but soon deteriorated into economically depressed clusters enveloped in rising crime and high unemployment.

The Lawn, in Harlow, Essex, was the first of these tower blocks, built in 1951, and is today a Grade II listed building. Other towers that were built later on, including Trellick Tower, Keeling House, Sivill House and The Barbican Estate, are now becoming popular again with young professionals. The demand for these properties is so high that there are now plans to redevelop the neighbourhoods of Little London and Lovell Park into luxury flats for these Young Urban Professionals or Yuppies as they are affectionately known.

Recent changes in the zoning laws in London have made it possible for the development of new high-rise office and residential towers. Property developers like Barrratt Homes are creating new apartments all over the city, with some available with schemes like shared equity, which give first time buyers a helping hand onto the property ladder.

Notable residential projects in the works in London are the London Bridge Tower, also known as the Shard of Glass, which will contain 72 floors of mixed use space, residential, commercial and recreational. Once completed, the Shard will stand 310 metres, the first building in London to top 1,000 feet. It will truly be a wonder, but St. George Tower, which will rise 181 metres, contain 49 floors of all residential space, is expected to make more of a splash for its innovative energy efficient technology. This new addition to the London residential community will be powered by a wind turbine on the top of the building and a water exchange system with the London Aquifer at its base. It has been approved and construction is expected to begin soon.
