The Technique And Effects Of Photo Art

What defines art is one of the oldest debates in the world

, and all arguments almost always lead to the same conclusion: art, and particularly good art, is largely subjective, depending on the tastes and definitions of the individual who perceives the piece. It's in the eye of the beholder, in other words.

However, most people agree and believe that art is the result of a skilled and talented artist who has a concept or an idea that he or she tries to express though paint, photography, sculpture, or a variety of other mediums so that others may experience the concept or idea as well. Most consider art to be good when they believe that the artist has excellent technical skill combined with a unique creative vision.

Today one of the most popular forms of art is photo art, which combines the skill of taking great photographs with graphic design that modifies, enhances, and interprets photographs. Of course the most popular photography artist who manipulated his photographs to express a concept and to introduce a new type of photo art is Andy Warhol. Many consider Warhol to be the founder of a new type of photo art and the creator of the pop art genre. He is most famous for his series of silk screen photographs of Marilyn Monroe and his series of Campbell soup cans.

To create these works, Warhol would take pictures with a Polaroid camera and then would take the photographs and create silk screens. The technique of silk screening incorporates the use of a specially prepared section of silk as a stencil and allowing one silk screen to create similar patterns multiple times. Essentially, Warhol was taking a photograph and adding different paints and colors to the image to create something new. Since Warhol, countless other methods of manipulating photographs have been developed and made popular.

But before anyone can modify or digitally alter a photograph, a person must first take a great picture. Those who are not familiar with the art of photography often do not realize the sills and creativity needed to capture a great shot. A photograph captures a moment that is unlike the moment before or after it, and to create that special moment that the photographer and artist wants takes careful planning and preparation. In some cases, a photographer only has a few minutes to take the picture before the lighting, the setting, or something else changes, preventing the photographer from capturing the moment he or she wants.

Of course, there a variety of different cameras with different lenses and shutter speeds that create different types of photographs. And of course, there are multiple different ways to develop photographs, but every good photographer has to work with light and shadows and with different subjects. One of the most difficult things to do, yet the most rewarding, is working with the subject of a photograph and getting it to express the emotion, image, or pose that the photographer desires.

Once the right photograph has been taken, graphic designers can then take the image and manipulate it in a variety of different ways to create different effects.

In many cases, photo art is when a person takes a photograph and digitally makes the image to look like it has been created using traditional art techniques, such as those using oil paint, watercolor, colored pencil, graphite, chalk, charcoal, crayon, marker, and so on. Artists can even combine these effects and techniques to make an even more interesting and unique image. And although anyone can create these effects using software like Photoshop, and professional graphic artist who has been trained in these techniques typically has a much higher skill level and knowledge of the effects of different color combinations and finishes that allows him or her to better produce the intended interpretation of a photograph.

For instance, these techniques can be used to create a whimsical feeling by blurring harsh lines or by changing colors to look more ethereal. Other effects can create harsher effects, such as by sharpening lines. Graphic designers can even manipulate the light and shadow of a photograph to create darker or lighter images. Photographs can be made in black and white with only one or two colors showing. And graphic artists can even paint over the photograph, adding different colors and highlighting different areas. All of these techniques are used to enhance an image, creating an artistic effect to express the artist's concept and creative vision.

And this photo art appeals to many people because they like the realistic images portrayed as well as the interpretation of the photos, caused by the manipulation of the image through graphic and digital design techniques. There are even several companies and organizations that specialize in taking people's photographs and turning them into photo art, taking into consideration the client's desires for the ultimate look, feel, and interpretation of the image.

Photo art is becoming more and more popular among art connoisseurs and other big names, including many celebrities. And no matter what your definition of art is, photo art that combines technical skill with a creative vision is now highly revered and features in many people's homes. Because of the many different techniques and effects of photo art, most people can find an image that they like, something that enhances traditional photography but still retains the realistic and life-imitating accuracy of a simple snapshot.

As you search for photo art to display in your own home, be sure to research the different techniques and effects that artists use so that you know exactly what would best enhance your home decor. And if you hire someone to create an image for you, be sure to communicate exactly what you want to the designer so that you're more likely to get what you expect. By knowing more about the ins and outs of photo art, you can better appreciate enhanced photography and find pieces to display in your own home.
